Description: "Myanmar junta’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has issued flood alerts for 18 townships in Kachin State and Sagaing, Magwe and Mandalay regions. The Irrawaddy, Chindwin and Myitnge rivers are above their danger levels, causing floods and casualties. The Chindwin is above its danger level in Hkamti, Homalin, Mawleik, Kalewa, Mingin, Kani and Monywa towns in Sagaing Region. Around 75 percent of Hkamti, including the central market, has been submerged since July 2. A resident said: “The water receded a little. The town and nearby villages are flooded. Low-lying houses and the market are completely submerged. The financial losses are huge.” At least one child has died in the flood. The meteorology department said on Wednesday that water would remain above the danger level in Hkamti for the next 24 hours. The Irrawaddy is above its danger level in Bhamo and Shwegu towns in Kachin State, Katha and Sagaing towns in Sagaing Region, Thabeikkyin, Mandalay and Nyaung-U towns in Mandalay Region and Pakokku in Magwe Region. A Sagaing town resident said: “The water rose rapidly. In previous floods, the water took at least three days to reach my home but this time it came in one day.” Charities have evacuated over 1,000 flood victims to pagodas and monasteries. The Irrawaddy was more than 38cm above its danger level in Mandalay on Wednesday and the junta’s Fire Services Department in the city said it is monitoring the situation. Tada-U, Myingyan and Nganzun in Mandalay Region have reported floods and the regime has issued a flood alert in Amarapura. The Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Ministry of the civilian National Unity Government on Monday warned of flooding on the Rakhine coast and in the Ayeyarwady delta, Mon State and Tanintharyi Region. Floods hit Myitkyina, Waingmaw, Putao and Sumprabum towns in Kachin State last week. Landslides reportedly killed seven people in Panwa and floods killed five in Myitkyina..."

Description: "Myanmar’s rural population are extremely vulnerable given their low human development and high dependence upon natural resources for their livelihoods (including agriculture, fisheries and forestry). This has led to environmental degradation including deforestation and poor land use management practices, diminishing water sources and high rates of food insecurity and sickness etc. These pre-existing vulnerabilities combined with the large number of hazards affecting Myanmar including cyclones, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, storm surges, droughts and landslides have resulted in a high risk rural society. In addition, climate change and its associated impacts are already, and will likely continue to exacerbate the situation further through more frequent, intense and widespread extreme hazard events including cyclones, floods and droughts, and through increased temperatures, rainfall variability and sea level rises. Myanmar has taken steps to addressing risk to hazards including climate change at the national level through the development of Myanmar’s Action Plan on Disaster Risk Reduction (MAPDRR) and the National Adaptation Program of Action on Climate Change (NAPA). However, in many cases rural communities are either not aware or have not yet benefited from the policies, strategies and actions outlined in these two documents. Communities are also those best placed to identify strategies and solutions to their problems as they are at the front line of hazard impact. It is therefore essential that urgent action is taken at the local level in partnership with communities, government, civil society and other stakeholders to implement actions identified in the NAPA and MAPDRR and increase the resilience of rural communities to hazards including climate change. This Handbook outlines a process whereby Malteser International staff and their partners can work in partnership with rural communities and local governments to address risk to hazards including climate change and increase community resilience. Firstly the Handbook outlines hazards, their associated impacts and sources of vulnerabilities facing rural communities in Myanmar. It then provides example actions and measures for inclusive disaster risk management and climate change adaptation at the community, township and state level. The Handbook then presents the case for an integrated approach to resilience building which embeds climate change adaptation strategies within a disaster risk management approach. The steps and tools for this approach are then described, before outlining how community resilience plans should be integrated into development plans at township and state level..."

Description: "Ecologically diverse, Myanmar has abundant water resources, species-rich coastal ecosystems and large forest reserves. However, population and economic growth and unsustainable use of natural resources are driving forces of ongoing environmental degradation which curb the ability of ecosystems to provide services and respond to shocks. Environmental impacts of climate change in Myanmar are far-reaching: increased risk of forest fires, plant pests and diseases, and desertification, particularly in the Central Dry Zone, due to droughts and extreme temperatures; loss of vegetation in mountain regions as result of rapid-onset events such as floods and landslides; and destruction of coastal ecosystems due to strong cyclones, among others. Although the country has a significant carbon sequestration capacity, high deforestation rates remain a critical issue. One of Myanmar?s major challenges ahead is to enhance the carbon sink potential of its forests which can also help generate other co-benefits such as adaptation..."
