Developer looks for way into iPhone apps market

A SOFTWARE development company in Yangon has begun adapting mobile telephone applications that it hopes to market through Apple’s online App Store.
U Htoo Myint Naung, the chief executive officer of Technomation Studios, said last week that the company is going to launch two applications – a directory and a dictionary – later this month that it hopes will make their way into App Store.
“Developing software programs for iPhones is not that difficult and should be time and cost effective because there’s enough demand for such applications,” he said. However, most potential customers in Yangon will have to buy the programs from the 15 mobile phone shops in Yangon and Mandalay when they are launched in the last week of April because few have access to international credit or debit cards that are required for online purchases.
The first application, the Yellow Mobile directory, will sell for K15,000 and has full access to the 40,000-plus telephone numbers and addresses in the Myanmar Industrial and Commercial Directory, U Htoo Myint said.
“You can search the entries easily by name, business type and its brand names,” he said, adding that the program will have direct-call links.
The second application is the iDefined program that includes an English to Myanmar dictionary – with some 300,000 words – and Oxford, Longman and Merriam-Webster dictionaries.
The application offers full definitions, pronunciations and examples. No price for the program has yet been set, he said.
He said his firm has submitted applications to iPhone application store for licence approval from Apple. If and when that approval is given, the applications will be sold through the international App Store network, he said.
“We are mainly targeting Myanmar expatriates in Singapore,” U Htoo Myint Naung added.
The two applications are iPhone versions of mobile phone programs that the company has already released: Yellow Mobile was launched in July last year, while the Defined dictionary was first introduced in 2008.
