Since the so-called transition to democracy— a transition often misunderstood and much exaggerated— Myanmar has been the centre of a ?gold rush”, as businesses from Asia and the West hope to make money from what has been called the ?Asia?s last economic frontier”. The EU accounts for around 10% of foreign direct investment in Myanmar and is keen to raise that number with its planned Investment Protection Agreement (IPA), a wide-ranging agreement on trade that has been in-negotiation in recent years. Yet, it has raised considerable concerns from civil society groups about the lack of transparency in these negotiations, and the potential negative impacts of the treaty. In 2016, over 500 CSOs jointly wrote to the EU commissioner, Cecilia Malmström, expressing their frustration with a ?consultation process” run by consulting agency ?Development Solutions”— one that amounted to little more than a few ?workshops” in Yangon and a scant questionnaire. ??[O]ne key question is missing: the question whether we at all want an IPA”, the letter states..."

"EU foreign ministers agreed Monday to lift the last of the bloc?s trade, economic and individual sanctions against Myanmar, hailing "a new chapter" with the once pariah state.

"In response to the changes that have taken place and in the expectation that they will continue, the Council [of ministers] has decided to lift all sanctions with the exception of the embargo on arms," said a statement approved without a vote.
"The EU is willing to open a new chapter in its relations with Myanmar/Burma, building a lasting partnership," it added.
The European Union began easing sanctions against Myanmar a year ago as the military, in power for decades, progressively ceded power to civilians and implemented wholesale reforms of the economy.
Ministers noted, however, that there were "still significant challenges to be addressed", in particular an end to hostilities in Kachin State and improving the plight of the Rohingya people..."

Description:
1. The EU strongly condemns the brutal crack-down on demonstrators in Burma/Myanmar. It recalls its earlier declarations in which it urged the Burmese authorities to exercise restraint in the face of peaceful protests. The EU regrets that these calls have gone unheeded and regrets that arrests have continued over the recent days.
