(1)   Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services addresses Graduation Parade of
39th Intake of DSA

YANGON, 1O April-The Graduation Parade of the 39th Intake of the Defence
Services Academy was held at the DSA Parade Ground in PyinOoLwin this morning,
with an address by Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than
Shwe.

Also present were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief
of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo,
members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in Chief (Navy)
Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than,
Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-
Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Ministers LtGen Tin Hla, Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Maj-Gen
Saw Tun, Brig Gen Lun Thi, U Thaung and U Than Aung, Military Appointment-
General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Judge Advocate General Maj-Gen Than Oo, Chief of
Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Defence Services Inspector-General
Brig-Gen Win Myint, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han,
Director of Military Engineers Brig-Gen Win Aung Tint, Commander of Bahtoo
Station Brig-Gen Moe Hein, Commandant of DSA Lt-Col Tin Win, senior officers
of the Ministry of Defence, military attaches, relatives of the graduating
cadets and guests.

First, the Senior General inspected the companies of the cadets.

Next, the companies of graduating cadets marched past the Commander-in-Chief
of Defence Services.

Afterwards, the Senior General presented Aungsitthi Award and Excellence in
Training Award to Cadet Kyaw Zeya, Excellence in Studies (Arts) Award to Cadet
Nanda Zaw and Excellence in Studies (Science) Award to Cadet Myo Min lun.

Later, the Senior General delivered an address.

(2)   Kyaukse, PyinOoLwin townships developing as planned

YANGON, 9 April Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-
in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected Township
People's Hospital in Kyaukse and Defence Services Academy and Defence Services
Training Schools in PyinOoLwin on 8 and 9 April.

The Senior General first visited Kyaukse Township People's Hospital at 1 ] .45
am on 8 April. Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council
Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint bliefed him on plogress in
renovation of the hospital and greening of Shwethalyaung Hill and Waibu Hill
and Medical Superintendent U Than Wai on staff strength and treatment, joined
in by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo.

Senior General Than Shwe stressed the need to conduct public health care down
to the grassroots-levels snK1 to systematicallv form groups for widescale
dissemination of health care education.

The Senior General and party visited the patients and urged officials to
ensure abundant' water supply at the hospital.

They then inspected the town belt road and township development.

Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council LtGen
Tin Oo and his entourage, the Senior General helicoptered to PyinOol win.

The next morning, the Senior General and party inspected the Defence Services
Academy.

Commandant of DSA Lt-Col Tin Win briefed them on progress in implementing DSA
development programmes and training and education programmes.

Senior General Than Shwe emphasized the need to bring out disciplined and
qualified cadets possessing high morale and three capabilities.

They visited cadets learning computer.

At Defence Services Administrative Support Training School, they head a report
on organization of A'STS, extension of buildings, welfare programmes and
courses which were conducted and are being conducted at the school presented
by Commandant Col Tin Oo. The Senior General gave suggestions.

At Defence Services Signals and Electronics Training School, they inspected
utilizations of computers and attended to requirements presented by Commandant
LtCol Kyi Tun.

During their inspection of Defence Services Engineering School, they head a
report on points of the institute presented by Commandant Col Soe Thein.-MNA.

(3)   Kambawzathadi Palace construction takes shape in original form

YANGON, 10 April Secretary-l of thc State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister
for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas
and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for
Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Health
Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister
at the Office of the Prime Minister MajGen Tin Ngwe, deputy ministers,
officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, department
heads, historians and officials, left for Bago this morning.

They were welcomed at Winbawdat Bridge, Thayagon Village, Bago Township, by
Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brigs Gen
Tin Aye and officials.

The Secretary- I and party visited Shwethalyaung Buddha Image in Bago.

The Secretary-1 was briefed by Brig-Gen Tin Aye and officials on extension and
renovation of the prayer hall.

Later, the Secretary-I and I arty inspected the construction work. The
Secretarv-1 donated cash towards the pagoda funds.

Next, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the foundation laying ceremony of
Seinthalyaung Buddha Image Sankyaungdaw.

The Secretary-l laid corner-stone and offered alms.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to the construction site of
Kambawzathadi Palace of King Bayintnaung.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and officials met officials at the office of the
construction site, and discussed construction work. The Secretary-l said
discussions on construction of Kambawzathadi Palace have been made many times,
and called on officials to build the palace in consonance with historical
facts and evidences.

On the basis of materials excavated from the palace site and other evidences
already collected, it can be estimated that the size of Kambawzathadi Palace
is six times bigger than that of Mandalay Golden Palace, he remarked.

In building Kambawzathadi Palace, it can be said that there is not much
difference in design between the original palace and the new one because of
historical facts and evidences, he noted.

Bamayathana Throne Hall (Settawsaung) has been already built and construction
work of Thihathana Throne Hall (Myaynanpyatthadsaung) completed 75 per cent,
he said.

The remaining tasks are to be undertaken according to the list of priorities,
he said.

The history of Hanthawady Period was splendid and significant, but historical
evidence is scattered, he said and added the Archaeology Department is
required to collect in advance ancient objects of Hanthawady Period and
TounsJoo Period with a view to collectively displaying them when a new
archaeology museum is built in Bago.

He called on authorities of Bago Division Peace and Development Council to
provide close supervision with a view to meeting the target.

He also urged historians to seek further evidences about Kambawzathadi Palace.

Senior Engineer of Public Works U Kyi Tun reported on progress of work in
construction of Thihathana Throne Hall, Assistant Director of Bago Division
Archaeology Department U Thein Lwin on progress of work in excavation of
palace site, finding of ancient objects and collecting ancient cultural
heritage for the Bago Archaeology Museum and Director of Bago Division
Development Affairs Department U Nyo Win Myint on measures taken for keeping
the environs of the palace site pleasant and beautiful .

Historians U Maung Maung Tin and Dr Khin Maung Nyunt, Professor of History
Department of Yangon University U Kyaw Win, Head of Archaeology Department U
San Nyein and Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt reported on historical
facts about King Bayintnaung and Kambawzathadi Palace, evolution of
civilization in Myanmar and matters related to cultural objects.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions.

Next, the Secretary-l and party inspected ancient Buddha Images, ancient
cultural heritage and construction work of Thihathana Throne Hall.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to Hanthawady International Airport
Project.

They were briefed by officials of Department of Civil Aviation and Public
Works on salient points of the project.

Later, the Secretary- I and party proceeded to Zalattaw Dam Project in Bago.

They were briefed by Brig-Gcn Tin Aye, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and
Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and officials on salient points and progress of
the project.

Then, the Secretary-1 inspected construction work. The implementaion of the
Zalattaw Dam Project began on 28 August 1997 with a view to ensuring
availability of water for Hanthawady Aiport, irrigating 3,5()() acres of
nearby farmland and supplying water to nearby regions which do not get water
in summer.

(4)   Secretary-3 receives Ambassador of Singapore

YANGON, 10 April Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council
Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint received Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen
Patrick Choy Choong Tow at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this
afternoon.

Present together with the Secretary-3 were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs
U Nyunt Swe and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.-MNA

(5)   Minister for Indust-l receives Ambassador of Japan

YANGON, 10 April- Minister br Industry-l U Aung Thaung received Ambassador of
Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai at his omce at 2 pm today

Also present were Deputy Minister Co] Than Z;n directors-general and managing
directors of departments and industries the ministry.

(6)   Yangon Thingyan to be held in accord with fine cultural traditions

YANGON, 10 April The 1359 ME Yangon Maha Thingyan will be held in accord with
Myanma culture and traditions in disciplined manner this year.

There will be nine entertainment mandats and 248 water-throwing pandals
organized with the supervision of the Leading Committee for Celebrating Yangon
Maha Thingyan.

(7)   Cocogyun gets TV retransmission station

YANGON, 10 April-The construction of a TV retransmission station was completed
in Cocogyun, Yangon Division, on 3 April. The station, built under the
supervision of Myanma Radio and Television and with the fund of the Department
for Progress of Border Areas and National Races under the arrangement of the
development of border areas and national races, has been telecasting since 4
April evening.-MNA

(8)   Locomotives, coaches, bogies arrive

YANGON, 10 April- Ten 2,000 HP diesel locomotives worth $19 million, two
passenger coaches and 118 bogies worth $12 million and spare pans worth $
20(),000 imported by Myanma Railways from China National Complete Plant Import
and Export Yunnan Corporation arrived on board mv Sagaing at Yangon Pont.

Deputy Minister br Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin inspected the
unloading at Sule Wharf 5 this morning.

The locomotives are to be used at the main railroads and bogies are to be
fitted as upper- and ordinary-c]ass passenger coaches at Myitnge Coach Shed.

(9)   Minister inspects Taungdwingyi-Magway Railroad Proiect

YANGON, 10 April Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung inspected
construction of Taungdwingyi-Magway Railroad on 8 April afternoon.

He was accompanied by Commander of No 88 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aye
Kyway and Managing Director U Kyaw Hsan of Myanma Railways. He also inspected
construction of a sub-railroad leading to Pahtanago Oil Storage Station of
Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise and gave instructions.

The minister discussed with officials concerned construction of Yin Creek
Bridge at the office of the project in Magway on 9 April.

He instructed them to take into considerations before starting the
construction as targeted.

The minister also inspected filter tanks of water supply project being
implemented for Magway University with the use of water from Ayeyawady River
and gave instructions.

He met engineers at the office of railroad project in Magway and gave
instructions..

(10)  Minister for NPED receives Regional MD of LG Group

YANGON, 10 April Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe
Tha received Regional Managing Director and Chief Executive Officers of Lucky
Goldstar (LG) Group Mr C M Koo and party at his office this evening.

They discussed bilateral economic cooperation and investment opportunities.
Present also were Deputy Minister for NPED Brig-Gen Zaw Tun and officials. v

(11)  400 tourists arrive by Ms Delphin See Reisen

YANGON, 10 April - Ms Delphin See Reisen with about 4()() tourists aboard
arrived here at 5.30 pm today. The trip is jointly organized by Myanma Tourism
Services of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and Oriental Sunbirds Tours
Company.

The tourists were welcomed by officials of MTS and OST Co. About 100 tourists
visited downtown Yangon and the Shwedagon Pagoda in the evening.

YANGON, 10 April Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint received
Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran and party at his office this morning.
Present also were advisers to the ministry, directors-general and officials.
