Stories from Dooplaya District, Karen State, Burma, March 2003, by Saw Takkaw

The girl, Naw M, unfortunately faces much more serious health challenges. At age 14, Naw M weighs only fifty pounds. Her small body and stunted growth even shocked the Thai hospital staff who deal with “border cases” regularly. She is anemic, malnourished, and has “chronic” malaria. At the time of writing this report, she was in the hospital and listed in serious condition. (Source: Free Burma Rangers, 2003)

Risks on the run abound. This young boy was wounded by a falling tree. Although the wound refuses to heal and the boy may end up losing his leg, his family will not attempt to get help. That itself is too risky. There is no medical care in Burma, and the trek to Thailand is life-threatening and in any case they will probably be refused entry. It has been reported that only people who have stepped on landmines are accepted in Thai hospitals. This boy is at risk of gangrene and is likely to need his to be amputated.
