1. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye attends stake-driving
ceremony for construction of Pathein Bridge

Ayeyawady Division rapidly developing, due to prevalence of peace and
stability and smooth transport

Yangon, 31 July - The stake-driving ceremony for construction of Pathein
Bridge across Ngawun River to link Mayanchaung village on the east bank with Kanni
village on the west bank of Ngawun River in Pathein Township, Ayeyawady
Division, was held at the pandal near Mayanchaung village yesterday morning.

Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy
Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung
Aye attended the ceremony and pressed the button to drive the bore pile for
construction of the bridge.

The Secretary-2 delivered a speech. In his speech, the Secretary-2 said that
the project is situated on Pathein-Shwemyintin-Wayarchaung road to link
Mayanchaung village on the east bank with Kanni village on the west bank of Ngawun
River.

In review of Ayeyawady Division in 1988, as for a local resident, to see such
modern bridges as Bo Myat Tun, Maubin, Dedaye and Myaungmya in the division
was a dream. Most of the roads stretching over 400 miles in the division did
not interlink each other and so they were not reliable ones.

But, now in the division, there has been an increase in the number of tarred
roads stretching over 1,300 miles and altogether 39 180-foot-and-above bridges
have been built. The government had to spend K 19,420 million plus over 20
million US$ for emergence of a network of roads and bridges in the division. So
the people can easily travel from one place to another in the division
crossing Ayeyawady, Ngawun, Yway, Bogale, Toe, Pantanaw and Einme rivers.

The Ngawun River is reliable for waterway but was a natural barrier in
travelling by land, causing a great hindrance to the transport sector and regional
development. That is why arrangements are being made to build Ngawun
river-crossing bridges -Ngawun Bridge (Pathein) and Ngawun Bridge (Myokwin) -in addition
to the existing Ngawun Railroad Bridge (Myokwin), Ngawun Bridge
(Ngathaing-chaung). Then, the ceremony was held to drive a stake for construction of
Pathein Bridge. On completion, the bridge will contribute towards the transport
sector for the convenience of over 300,000 people residing in 488 villages of 93
village-tracts in Pathein, Yekyi, Thabaung and Ngapudaw townships on west bank
of Ngawun River.

Local products such as marine products, rice, dried coconut and forest
products can easily be transported to other regions. On completion of Thabaung Pulp
Mill being built by the Ministry of Industry-1, the products can also be sent
in a short time, contributing much towards swift commodity flow. Moreover,
people from Mawtinsun on west Pathein bank can access to Union Highways such as
Pathein-Yangon Road and Pathein-Monywa Road through Thabaung-Kyangin Road or
Thandwe-Gwa-Yenantha-Thabaung Road. With smooth transportation, hotel and tourism
industries on the Ngwe Hsaung Beach and the Chaungtha Beach will make
remarkable progress. And the fisheries in Ngwe Hsaung and Chaungtha regions will
meet greater success. Resulting from construction of roads and bridges one after
another in Ayeyawady Division, it can access to other states and divisions and
to the townships in the division by land or by water in a short time. As is
known to all, with the emergence of the network of roads and bridges, the
division's economic, trade and social sectors are making significant progress, he
said.

At a time when the government has been implementing the projects for ensuring
equitable development, narrowing the development gap among all parts of the
nation and raising the living standard of the entire people, in accordance with
the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, all the national
races are to make efforts with might and main and to collectively participate in
the projects, he noted.

As the people in Ayeyawady Division with a vast experience on nation-build
tasks are honest and hardworking, in response to the genuine goodwill of the
Head of State, the Secretary-2 called on them to repay the gratitude by carrying
out the tasks two or three times in unison and by contributing towards
prevalence of peace and stability in the region.

Next, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun said that only when the
transport is smooth, will the improvement of the State's economic, education,
health and social sectors follow.

The Ministry of Construction spending over K 80,000 million plus US$ over 147
million has been constructing roads and bridges in the states and divisions.
He pledged that the ministry will place emphasis on completion of the Pathein
Bridge Construction Project as soon as possible for greater development of
Pathein region.

Commander Maj-Gen Htay Oo said that the government has constructed many roads
and bridges in Ayeyawady Division which is teeming with rivers and creeks,
enabling the local people to travel from one place to another in the region in a
short time. The Pathein Bridge Construction Project is going to be
implemented soon, and it will make contribution towards greater development of the
region. He said, on behalf the people in the region, he thanked the government for
implementation of the development project in the region with goodwill.

Afterwards, General Maung Aye extended greetings to those present, saying
that he wishing them good health and happiness. The government has been building
transport facilities one after another for modernization and development of
the nation, he added.

For ensuring equal development of all parts of the nation, the 24 special
development regions project, border areas and national races development project
and the five rural development project are being implemented, contributing
much towards remarkable development in economic, education, health and transport
sectors of the states and divisions.

In the past, Ayeyawady Division lagged behind in development due to lack of
peace and tranquillity. But, now the region is developing rapidly, due to the
prevalence of peace and stability and smooth transport.

The region's five districts, in which people previously had to mainly rely on
waterway to travel from one district to another spending two or three days,
have enjoyed fruitful results of better transport. So, one can travel to
another district in the division or to other states and divisions by land in a short
time.

The government has been making earnest efforts for ensuring earlier
completion of the construction projects on self-reliance to enable the people to enjoy
the fruitful results as soon as possible. The General pledged the people to
make strenuous efforts for timely completion of the project.

Next, the Secretary-2, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and
Commander Maj-Gen Htay Oo took positions at designated places and drove stakes
and sprinkled scented water on them.

General Maung Aye pressed the button to drive the bore pile. The General and
party next sprinkled scented water on it. They performed rituals of golden and
silver showers to mark successful completion of the ceremony and cordially
greeted those present.

They inspected the site chosen for construction of the bridge.

The Bridge Construction Project Group 8 of Public Works will undertake the
project. On completion, the bridge will be a 2,680 feet long steel suspension
one with a 28-foot-wide motorway on it.
