better transport. As a result of developing transportation, Myaungmya District has
achieved greater progress. It is necessary to accelerate development momentum.

administrative bodies are to make initiatives and cooperate with the

together with the people for regional and national development.

Division is one of the divisions on which the State has to depend economically.

sufficiency for existing population of the State.

Tremendous efforts are being made to meet the target of producing 1,200
million baskets of paddy in 2003-2004 to ensure rice sufficiency for at least 100
million population. Farmers are making concerted efforts for extended
cultivation of paddy since the new policy of paddy trading was introduced. To this end,
it is expected to meet the target of paddy production, he pointed out.

The government has been making systematic efforts for ensuring water supply
for agricultural purpose and better transport in the region as well as for
uplift of standard of education and health. The government has been doing with the
aim of ensuring food sufficiency for the posterity and of enhancing their
living standard.

Concerted and collective efforts will have to be made by themselves for
development of own region and own nation. The strength of the nation lies within.
As long as the State, the people and the Tatmadaw are making efforts, the
national objectives will be realized sooner, he stressed.

He said that educated persons and highly-qualified human resources are of
paramount importance in building a nation. Thus, it is incumbent upon the
universities and colleges opened in the region to produce highly qualified
intellectuals and intelligentsia.

8. Breastfeeding hospitals and townships recognized
   and honoured

YANGON, 1 Aug - The Ministry of Health organized a ceremony for recognition
of breastfeeding hospitals and townships at the hall of the Institute of
Nursing (Yangon) on Bogyoke Aung San Street here this morning.

Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint delivered an address on the occasion.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, President
of the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe,
directors-general and deputy directors-general of departments under the
ministry, rectors, directors, medical superintendents, officials from UN agencies and
social organizations, and others.

In his speech, Minister Dr Kyaw Myint said that World Breastfeeding Week has
been observed worldwide as well as in Myanmar since 1992. This year, the 12th
World Breastfeeding Week will be observed in Myanmar as of today.

>From 1992, August 1 to 7 has been designated as the breastfeeding week, which
is observed worldwide with ceremonies.

The Ministry of Health, under the leadership of the National Health
Committee, drew up plans systematically and is implementing them with the aim of
promoting national health standard. Among them is the breastfeeding plan, which has
been realized since January 2003.

Up to this year, a total of 321 hospitals have been designated as
breastfeeding hospitals, and 99 townships as breastfeeding townships.

The chosen motto for World Breastfeeding Week this year is "Breastfeeding in
a globalized world - for peace and justice".

Mother's milk contains antibiotics. Therefore, for human beings, milk powder
produced from the animal's milk is not as good as the mother's milk.
Breastfeeding has many fine points.

Therefore, it is necessary for health staff to educate the public, especially
mothers and expectant mothers, to practise it.

The saying that goes "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world"
highlights the fact that the future of a child is in the hands of his mother.

Like previous years, World Breastfeeding Week will be observed from 1 to 7
August. Today, 1 August, a total of 17 hospitals and 19 townships will be
awarded.

The breastfeeding plan can not be carried out by the health staff alone.
Success will be achieved only when health-related ministries, NGOs, and the public
lend themselves to this campaign. During the past 10 years, the ministry
could carry out the plan in 321 hospitals out of 757. Therefore, it can be said
that the achievement is less than 50 per cent.

Thus, it is incumbent on health officers of states and divisions to make
efforts to an extent that all the hospitals in their states and divisions will be
regarded as breastfeeding hospitals.

Moreover, the hospitals and townships regarded as breastfeeding hospitals and
townships are to maintain their already achieved status. The breastfeeding
policies and the 10 steps of breastfeeding are needed to follow, he said.

He also expressed his thanks to the UNICEF, which renders assistance to
making field tour of hospitals and townships to inspect whether the breastfeeding
policy was practised there. He also thanked the WHO for its help in the holding
of breastfeeding counselling training workshops.

Resident Representative of the UNICEF Ms Corroll Long also spoke on the
occasion.

Next, the minister presented awards to officials from the Aphyauk Station
Hospital, Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division; the Shwekyin Township Hospital in
Bago Division (East); the Nyaungphyu Station Hospital in Monywa Township,
Sagaing Division; and the Amyint Station Hospital in ChaungU Township, which were
regarded as breastfeeding hospitals.

The deputy minister also presented awards to officials from the Palaw
Township Hospital and the Kyunsu Township Hospital in Taninthayi Division, and
Zayatkyi Station Hospital in Htantabin Township, Bago Division (East), which were
also regarded as breastfeeding hospitals.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe also presented awards to officials from the Zeyawady
Station Hospital and the Kanyutkwin Station Hospital in Pyu Township, Bago
Division; and the Phado Station Hospital in Kyauktada Township, which were also
regarded as breastfeeding hospitals.

Later, Ms Corroll Long and Dr Stephan Jost of the Office of Resident
Representative of the WHO awarded officials from the station hospitals, regarded as
breastfeeding hospitals, in Ayeyawady Division, Sagaing Division and Bago
Division (East).

Director-General of the Health Department Dr Wan Maung and officials also
gave away prizes to nurses, midwives and representatives from the townships which
were regarded as breastfeeding townships
