1011-01 Financial Sector To Grow Further
**Myanmar's Finance minister met on 7th October with the visiting Director
of French Financial Institution Schlumberger Co in Yangon.

Banque National de Paris (BNP) and Banque Franco-Commerce Exterior (BFCE)
of France have their representative offices in Yangon.

During his recent visit to Washington, Myanmar Finance Minister met with
the officials of World Bank including the vice Governor.

He also met in Washington with the Managing Director of Tokyo-Mitsubishi
Bank (who has it representative office in Yangon) Chairman of Mitsui Marine
and Fire Insurance of Japan (which is expected to establish insurance
business in Myanmar soon) and also with the Chairman of German G&D company

1011-02 Cyclist Team & Travels Myanmar
**A group of U.S amateur cyclist team is coming to Myanmar this November.
The group will pursue cycle expeditions across Myanmar for 21 days.

Also in the first week of November groups of 220 French tourists, and 97
U.S tourists are expected to visit Yangon and ancient Myanmar capital
Bagan.

1011-03 Hong Kong Firm Seeks Investment Opportunities
**Head of Myanma Investment Commission met with the visiting Area Manager
and delegation of Hong Kong's Light & Power-Power International (CLP-PI) in
Yangon on 8th October.

In the past week Kerry Investment Management of Hong Kong, met also with
the head of Myanma Investment Commission in Yangon mainly to discuss in
detail programs to increase Hong Kong's investment in Myanmar and to create
more opportunities for investment in Myanmar.

Currently according to the Myanma Investment Commission Hong Kong has over
US$ 120 million investment in Myanmar.

1011-04 More Cambodian Economic Cooperation Seen
**Myanmar's Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation met with the Cambodian
Ambassador in Myanmar on 7th October to discuss greater economic
cooperation.

The ambassador recently also met with Myanmar's Minister for Industry 1 in
Yangon.

Last month, Myanmar and another Indochina nation Laos signed a technical
assistance agreement. Under that agreement Myanmar will provide technical
assistance for the construction of dam and developing of agricultural farms
in Bokeo province, close to the Laos- Myanmar border.

1011-05 Natural Fertilizers Developed From Waste
**Myanma Agricultural Service is producing natural fertilizers like
Rhizobium, Trichoderma and gypsum from the by-product of sugar mills and
garbage.

Central Myanmar sugar growing region has a number of sugar mills and two
more sugar plants will start operating by the early 2000.

Also from humus natural fertilizers like the various types of Bokashi are
produced in large scale.

These natural fertilizers can enrich the land and provide nutrients for
plants throughout the plants' life span.

1011-06 Year 2000 Photo Contest
**Japanese Sasakawa Sports Foundation is sponsoring a photo contest in
Japan early next year to commemorate the commencement of the new millennium.

The Sasakawa Foundation also invited Myanmar photographers for the
competition.
Winners get gold trophies and Yen 5 million in cash.

1011-07 Myanmar Last Week
**Last week's business summary:
1. Myanmar and Bangladesh officials discussed the promotion of bilateral
cooperation in trade and investment in Dhaka. On 3rd October a high-level
Myanmar trade delegation led by Minister for Commerce accompanied by four
Myanmar officials went to Bangladesh on the invitation of the Bangladesh
Government.
2. Last weekend a new hotel was inaugurated in Yangon. The 10-storied hotel
building consists of 42 modern luxury living rooms. The hotel is built in
the Yangon city center.
3. A 31 member Japanese economic mission visited Yangon. On 4th October the
mission discussed matters related to investments in Myanmar, transfer of
technology, establishment of factories and opportunities for promoting
bilateral trade with the officials of Myanmar's Chamber of Commerce.
Another Japanese entrepreneur, President of Japan's EXE Asia Company
Limited visited Yangon and had a discussion session with Myanmar's Hotel
and Tourism Minister in Yangon on 3rd October. In the past week the
Director of Nanning Heavy Machinery and Equipment Import and Export
Corporation was in Yangon to discuss business matters with Myanmar's
Minister for Industry 1.
4. Myanmar participated in the Hong Kong gems emporium held in Hong Kong.
Myanmar displayed a total of 107 lots of pearls worth over US$ 900,000. At
the emporium Myanmar sold 62 lots of pearls worth US$ 668,985.
