(1)		The Government of Myanmar issued an order regarding Commutation and
Remission of Sentences on 1st of December. 1997. The order issued is as
follows; -

Commutation and Remission of Sentences
 
1.		Taking into lenient consideration citizen prisoners undergoing 
sentences under orders passed by the relevant courts, the State Peace and 
Development Council hereby issues this Order.
 
2.		In respect of citizen prisoners undergoing death sentence, imprisonment
for a term of and unlimited poriod, transportation for life or imprisonment
for a term exceeding 10 years under order passed by a civil court, military
court or military tribunal, the respective sentences which they are
undergoing shall be commuted and remitted as follows;-
 
		(a)	to commute death sentence to transportation for life ( imprisonment for
a term of 20 years ) for those prisoners undergoing the said sentence;

		(b)	to remit the imprisonment ranging from a term exceeding 
20 years to imprisonment for a term of an unlimited period to imprisonment
for a term of 15 years for those prisoners undergoing the said sentence; 	

		(c)	to commute the sentence of transportation for life to 
imprisonment for a term 10 years for those prisoners undergoin the said
sentence; 

		(d)	to remit the imprisonment ranging from a term exceeding 

10 years to a term of 20 years according to each offence to imprisonment for
a term of 10 years according to each offence for those prisoners undergoing
the said sentence.

3.		The commutation and remission of sentences under this Order shall apply
only to sentences passed by the relevant courts up to 15 th Noveber, 1997.

4.		The commutation and remission of sentences under this Order shall not
affect the period which the prisoner concerned is ordinarily entitled.

5.		This Order shall have the force of Law.

(2)		Myanmar Sigma Cable to Establish Electric Wire Factory.
		Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development and Myanmar Sigma
Cable Co Ltd signed a land lease contract to establish electric wire factor
with foreign investment in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone at Traders Hotel on 1
December.

(3)		National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting on 1 December at
the Convention Convening Management Committee presented matters pertaining to
the National Convention. NCC members looked in to their requirements.

(4)		Malaysia- Based Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mission Meets
Myanmar Counterparts
		The visiting 50 - years Trade mission of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce
and Industry based in Malaysia led by General Secretary Dato Soong Siew Hoong
and Executives of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and entrepreneurs
held a meeting at the Traders Hotel Yangon on 1 December. MCCI explained
investment opportunities in Myanmar with the aid of video and slides and also
briefed the guests on rules, laws and procedures on investment in Myanmar.
Responsible personnel answered the questions asked by those present. A
general round of discussions then followed.

(5)		Basic Gems Course and Basic and Advanced Geo-engineering Survey Courses
Open
		Basic gems course and advanced geo - engineering survey courses jointly
sponsored by Yangon University Welfare Committee for Employee and Geology
Association opened at Geology Department of YU on 1 December. The one- month
courses are being attended by 147 trainees, The courses will be open at the
beginning of every month.

(6)		Mandalay Daily Begins Circulation
		Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung addressed a
ceremony marking the publication of Mandalay Daily held at City Hall in
Mandalay on 29 November evening. The Mandalay Daily is published by Mandalay
City Development Committee. On November 30th the minister attended a
groundbreaking ceremony to build a modern complex, which will be undertaken
by City Man Company in Mandalay.

(7)		Amphetamine Tablets Seized
		A combined team comprising members of Defence Services 
Intelligence and Myanmar Police Force on 16 November arrested two persons
from Loihsaungtauk region. Altogether 35 packets of amphetamine containing
7,000 tablets were seized from Paw Aye (a) Maung Aye, 30, and one of them
fled and escaped. Legal action is being taken against him according to Law.

		OFFICE CALLS IN YANGON ON 1 DECEMBER

(A)		chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Khin
received Managing Director of Daewoo Corporation Mr Kwang Seong Oh and party
at his office.
(B)		Minister for Energy U Khing Maung Thein received Director of Fritz
Werner Industry Ausrutungen GmbH Mr Christ and party.
(C)		Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received
General Manager of Myanmar Kuok Oils and Grains Ltd Mr Chua Jin and party
Myanmar Investment Commission Office.
		The Minister also received Head of Office of LG Int'l Corporation Mr Chung
Sung Ho and party of the Republic of Korea at his office.
		The Minister also received President of Malaysian Rubber Products
Manufacturers's Association Mr Tan sri Datuk Arshad Ayub and party at his
office.
