Statement by Students' Unions regarding United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Ms. Noeleen Heyzer's Visit to Myanmar

Description:

"On August 16, 2022, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General Ms. Noeleen Hazer, came to Myanmar and met with the junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, and military associates. This trip is said to be a follow-up visit of the request for the immediate cessation of all violence in Myanmar and the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need. Although it had been announced that the Special Envoy, Ms. Noeleen Hazer, would meet with stakeholders and leaders from various sectors in Myanmar during this trip, she only met and discussed with the military junta. She did not meet with the oppressed people and political prisoners, who are pertinent to the demands for delivery of humanitarian assistance and release of unjustly detained political prisoners, and she did not meet with democracy activists either. While the United Nations have declared that they do not recognize the military regime as the legitimate government, this visit by Ms. Noeleen Hazer is apparent to be in recognition of the military council. Therefore, we regard Ms. Noeleen Hazer’s visit as an unfair meeting which did not involve equal discussions with stakeholders from different sectors and only had one-sided discussions with the terrorist military, and hence, we strongly condemn this visit. We would like to apprise the United Nations of the need to carefully prevent more activities as this - which appear to be in recognition of the military junta and neglecting the consent of Myanmar people. As the United Nations is an organization committed to peace and justice, we earnestly urge the Special Envoy Ms. Noeleen Heyzer to meet as soon as possible with the National Unity Government (NUG), which has received the support of Myanmar people, the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), composed of pro-democracy alliances, as well as stakeholder groups. The military junta has also published the discussions between Special Envoy Ms. Noeleen Hazer and the military council. We urge the Secretary-General to release a clear statement on whether these publications are accurate, and whether they are consistent with the stance of the United Nations..."
