This article was prepared for presentation at an Asian seminar on non-farm employment held in the Philippines in 2001, but the information about Myanmar that it presents has more to do with rural development projects than with non-farm employment in rural areas. The article contains some useful tables with information not readily available in other published material about these programs, the national land reclamation scheme, industrial employment, etc. The statistical data is now somewhat dated, but most of the programs described are still in place. The article, prepared by a state employee, is descriptive rather than analytical.
