Burma Hands Over Corpse of BDR to Bangladesh

Burmese authorities handed over the dead body of a Bangladesh Rifles member who was killed by smugglers to Bangladesh authorities in the border town of Maungdaw on 5 December 2006, said an official from the Burmese border security force.

The Burmese officer confirmed that the corpse was handed over to Bangladesh authorities in Maungdaw, a western border town of Burma, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

A team of Bangladesh Rifles led by the commander of BDR Battalion 23 based in Teknaf received the corpse at the Maungdaw Jetty, and soon after brought the body of the BDR officer to Bangladesh via machine boat.

According to a Burmese authority source, the BDR member drowned in the Naff River on the night of 4 December as a BDR team was attempting to catch a smugglers' boat in Bangladesh waters.

Bangladesh authorities, however, say that a group of smugglers attempting to enter Burma killed him during an armed clash with the BDR team on the Naff River.

A source reported that the victim was identified as Mohammad Jafor Ullah, aged 52, a BDR sergeant from St. Martin BDR outpost in Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh
