Bangladeshis Given Five Year Sentence in
Burma

24 Bangladeshi woodcutters were sentenced to five years each by a Burmese court for violation of immigration and forestry laws.

The woodcutters appeared before the court in the border Township of Maung Daw. They were sentenced under the Illegal Immigration Act (31/13) for three years, and the Foresty Act (42/1) for two years.

These woodcutters were detained by the Nasaka, the Burmese border security on April 14.

They were arrested while they were cutting wood in Burmese territory. A patrol team of Nasaka Region One encountered the group of Bangladeshi woodcutters near Border Post 46.

The woodcutters had been cutting the wood for many months by bribing the Nasaka officers. But at that time Nasaka officers refused to accept the bribe and arrested them.

Before the incident several Nasaka officials were dispelled from their job by Rangoon authorities due to their involvement in the corruption in the area.

The woodcutters are from Natkyauksari Township, a border town of Bangladesh near the Burmese town of Maungdaw.
