Storm Kills Two Boatmen in Arakan

 

Two boatmen were killed in a small storm that had winds up to 45 miles per hour (60 kph) in the coastal area of Arakan on 29 June, said a report. The identities of the deceased were unknown but they were reportedly from Mawlamyine, the capital of Mon state.

On 30 June, Another ten boatmen were rescued from a damaged cargo boat by the Burmese coast guard near the banks of the
Naff River in the southern part of Maungdaw.

The boat had come to Akyab, the capital of Arakan, from Taungup town in southern Arakan state on 28 June. The storm struck on 29 June when the boat arrived at the mouth of the
Kaladan River near Akyab.

According to an official source, the boat's pilot, U Han Thein, 45, and the mechanic, U Khin Maung Myint, were injured in the incident. Both men are from Mawlamyine.

On the
Bangladesh side over 30 fishermen have been missing since the storm on 29 June.

Storms frequently hit Arakan state during the beginning of rainy season, killing hundreds of people and damaging a number of properties. The storm on June 29 was the first to hit Arakan this year.
