A Rohingya Teenaged Girl Gang Raped

Toungbro, June 5: A 17 year-old Rohingya girl was gang raped by some members of the Burmese military on June 2. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the close relatives of the victim confirmed to Kaladan Press Network.

The victim — daughter of Sayed Karim — was raped by at least 4 military personnel belonging to the Taungbro Left camp of Maungdaw, Arakan State, Burma.

Reportedly, military personnel forcibly took the victim away from her home to the nearby jungle at about 4.30 PM. Her mother's bid to resist was pushed away. Later, she was gang raped in jungle at gunpoint, the relative added.

Cries for help, from the victim and her mother, went in vein, as villagers were too frightened to confront the army members and quickly retreated themselves to their homes. Later, the victim was rescued from the jungle in an unconscious state. The victim is now hospitalized and slowly recovering, Kaladan Press Network bureau learnt from a telephone call.

On June 3, Sayed Karim and victim's elder brother Mohammed Shafique were taken to the military camp and severely beaten up on account of alleging rape and torture. They were cautioned not to expose any further details about the rape episode.

Fakir Ahamed — Chairman, Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC) — was also beaten up and threatened as he filed a case at the local police camp in connection with the rape.

Severe tortures of women at the hands of military personnel are now taking new heights in Burma as part of the ethnic cleansing campaign that now goes on against minority population — Kuki, Khumi, Shan, Kachin, Palong, Pa-Oo, Padaung, Karen, Karenni, Naga and Rohingya.
