Football Tournaments held between Nasaka and BDR

Taungbro (Maungdaw) May 30: Football tournament was held between Nasaka and   BDR on May 24 at Laikra village (Kuirkhali), the headquarters of the Nasaka sector No. 04, at about 15 miles of Maungdaw town in Arakan State of Burma, said Ali Ahamed, from Whykong.

At first, the football tournament was organized by Burmese border security forces (Nasaka) by collecting money from nearby villagers.

On May 24, 2005, a football team of Bangladesh Rifles, or BDR crossed the Naff River by a small boat while the Nasaka personnel and the villagers welcomed them from the jetty.

The football team was inaugurated by the Commander of Nasaka Sector No. 4 and the game was   started from 4:30 pm. Audiences are watching enthusiastically of the play. Villagers were clapping both sides of the teams.  Both sides of the players were playing in jubilant mood. However, the Nasaka had won the tournament by two goals.

Although Bangladesh team was trying very hard to get goals, the game was over at about 6:15 pm without gaining any goal against Nasaka.

A villager of Kuirkhali said “We have to pay 2,000 to 3,000 Kyat to the Nasaka for the football match per family excluding poor families to feed the football teams.”

Having finished football tournament, the Nasaka arranged an entertainment slaughtering goats and cocks. But, the expenditure of the entertainment had to be paid by the villagers.

Having dinner, the Bangladesh team returned home happily.

Again, in May 28, 2005, the Nasaka football team came to Whykong village of Teknaf Township of Cox’ Bazar District by the invitation of BDR.

However, this time also, the both of the teams played football in Whykong football ground very eagerly. The public of Bangladesh gave encouragement to the Nasaka.

In the last match, Bangladesh team also suffered a 0-2 defeat against their Burma counterpart. Bangladesh BDR lost the entire two matches while they played in Burma and Bangladesh.

The BDR and Nasaka vow with each other to maintain their good relation and to increase relation further between two neighboring countries in future, said a BDR official. ##
