A Bangladeshi fisherman died in
Burma jail

Teknaf, May 01: A Bangladeshi fisherman died in Maungdaw Town jail of Arakan State, Burma on 23rd April 2005.

The dead body was identified as Noor Alam son of Sultan Ahamead hailed from Gular Para of Saint Martin Island of Teknaf police station under Cox’s Bazaar District, Bangladesh, said Mir Ahamed, a close relative of Noor Alam from Saint Martin.

One month ago, Noor Alam accompanied by other fishermen of Bangladesh was picked up by Nasaka (Burmese Security Force) while they were catching fish in the Naf River mouth near Saint Martin Island. Then they were kept in the jail of Maungdaw town. But, he was dead only 4 days before, while all the fishermen once accompanied by him were released on 27th April 2005, by exchange of prisoners between two governments, he further said.

He took his last breathing on 23 April 2005, in the jail of Maungdaw for the cause of different kinds of diseases. After his death, the Nasaka immediately informed to his family through Bangladesh authorities to take the dead body to Bangladesh. But, his family could not arrange a boat and afford the expenditure. As a result, they could not able to return the dead body to Bangladesh as his family’s poverty said Helal from Saint Martin.

Alternatively, the family of Noor Alam permitted to the Nasaka to burry the dead body in Burma. After getting permission from concerned family, the Nasaka allowed to close by villagers to bury the dead body in Maungdaw, said Kabir who was recently released from Burma jail. ##
