Wild Elephant Killed a Refugee Boy in
Bangladesh

Teknaf, April 30: Wild elephant killed a Rohingya refugee boy in a forest nearby the west of Nayapara camp, Teknaf, under Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh, yesterday, said Alam, a refugee who could manage to escape from killing.

Yesterday, at about 12:00 pm, a refugee boy named Mohammed Amin, 10, son of Mir Ahmed, bearing refugee card number MRC-41421 from Block-C, shed No. 6/2. He went to nearby hill to collect fire wood together with some other refugees from the same camp, he further said.

Some refugees including the boy met with a wild elephant while they were cutting wood and the elephant suddenly  seized with its trunk and threw him  to the jungle and left him death  but some other refugees could manage to escape from the danger, he continued.

On information, the Camp-in-Charge of the Nayapara refugee camp, Mr. Asaduzzaman called the parents of the victim and order to bury the dead body, while he asked all the refugees not to go to the forest, said Ahmed, another refugee from the camp who has close relation with the office of the Camp-in-Charge.

Today, at early 6:00 am the dead body was buried at the refugee cemetery of Nayapara, he added.

Though the UNHCR provides firewood for refugees, it is not enough for them as it provides only 2 to 3 mounds (I mound=40kgs) in a month for a family. So, refugees have  either to buy woods from the  local markets after selling their foods or would go to the  forest to collect firewood, said Yusuf, a refugee teacher who has been teaching refugee children in the camp.
