Burma FM Nyan Win due today

Chittagong, Feb.24: Burma foreign minister, Nyan Win, arrives on a three-day visit today.

During his visit, he is expected to discuss covering the entire gamut of bilateral relations as well regional and international issues of common concern, the planned project on establishing direct Dhaka-Rangoon road link between two neighbors through construction of a bridge over the Naaf river and Rohingya refugee repatriation with his counterpart, said a source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visit bears special significants since Burma is a member of both ASEAN and BIMSTEC. Bangladesh is expected to seize the opportunity to discuss the future program of BIMSTEC. Bangladesh will also exchange views with him on the initiative to become dialogue partner of ASEAN.

Nyan Win will be visiting at the invitation of the Bangladesh foreign minister, M Morshed Khan.

The Burma foreign minister is likely to call on the prime minister, Khaleda Zia, today.

The visit comes at a time when the military-ruled Myanmar has reopened the constitutional drafting convention amid strong criticism from domestic opponents, the United States and the European Union for failing to ensure participation of the dissidents.

Nyan Win will also lay the foundation stone of a bridge at Taungbro on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border and will visit Buddhist Pagoda Aggya Medha Kaing there.

Officials said construction of a 57-km road connecting Maungdaw of Burma and Ramu of Cox’s Bazar District of Bangladesh will feature prominently during the meet.

The sides will discuss on means to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Dhaka and Rangoon.

Bangladesh imported goods worth 26.5 million dollars and exported goods worth 3.52 million dollars in 2004, while in the previous fiscal, Bangladesh exports to Burma stood at 1.12 million against an import of 35.9 million dollars. ##
