Rohingya lost an Elite

 

Chittagong, February 19: Rohingya community lost an elite, named Mr. Mumtaz Jamil (alias) U Zaw Min, son of Sayagyi U Ba Maung (alias) Haji Abu Jamil, former headmaster of State Middle Schools.

 

 Mumtaz Jamil was died of cardiac failure on 25th January, 2005 at Chittagong Medical College.

 

He was born on 9th January 1947 in his ancestral home at Habi Para (village) in Maungdaw Township of Arakan State.He was the eldest son of Haji Abu Jamil and Mrs. Halima Khatoon.

 

He received his primary education from State Middle School of Maungdaw town and Matriculated from State High School of Maungdaw. He was one of the meritorious students of both schools. He obtained his Bachelor B.Sc degree from the University of Rangoon in 1970.

 

He joined the Bangladesh Consulate of Sittwe (Akyab), Arakan of Burma in 1972 as a local staff. But the political circumstances did not give him the chance to continue his job and he had compelled to leave the motherland in 1978 to escape the arrest of the brutal Military Intelligence Service (MIS). Since then he had to stay in Bangladesh.

 

In Bangladesh Mr. Mumtaz served for many socio-political organizations of the Rohingya community in various capacities. He was General Secretary of Arakan Historical Society from 1992 to 1994. He was also general Secretary of Research and Publicity Committee of Arakan Historical Society from 2001 to till his death.

 

The Rohingya nation has lost a great son and an outstanding leader. He tried to be more concerned about the welfare of the people. He was an honest man; his voice was democratic; moderate and secular.

 

He was the editor of the Newsletter of Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), the Rohingya Review, Rohigya Tribune, published by Arakan Historical Society, and Rohingya Review, published by Burmese Rohingya Association of Japan (BRAJ). He was also publisher of the Annual magazine of Arakan Historical Society from 2001 to 2003.

 

He has also relation with National Democratic Institute, based in Washinton and Mr. Rezali, the UN special envoy for Burma.

 

His death is a great lost for the Rohingya Community. He has left a son and three daughters, three brothers and three sisters, relatives and colleagues to mourn his death.

 

We all mourn his death and share deep grief with his wife, and with adult children. May eternal God keep his soul rest and peace. ##
