12-Top Level Nasaka Officers Including Nasaka Director Arrested

 

Maungdaw, January 10: 12-top level Nasaka officers including Nasaka Director, Nasaka deputy Director and Military Intelligence-18 ( MI-18) Chief on 25th December 2004, from  Maungdaw and Buthidaung Townships, Arakan State of  Burma, according to a man who is  close to government officials.

 

A team headed by Lt. Gen Khin Maung Than, a member of State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and in-Charge-of Arakan State, which include the Western Command Commander Brig General Min Aung Naing, the Western Commander have arrived at Nasaka Headquarters of Maungdaw Township of Arakan by two helicopters on 23rd December 2004 to access the situation and arrested the Nasaka Director, Col. Aung Ngwe, the deputy Director of the Nasaka, Lt Col. Myint Oo, the MI-18 Chief, Major Than Sin, he further added.

 

The team also arrested 9-Commander of Nasaka Sectors of Maungdaw and Buthidaung Townships. They are: Major Aung Naing Win, Major Aye Tun Lin, Major Soe Maung Maung, Major Zaw Min Oo, Major Rang Naing Soe, Major Tun Tun Oo, Major San Aung, Captain Soe Min Hlatt and Captain Khine Moe, said another man who is also close to officials indirectly and requested us not to mention his name.

 

Last year, some army officers from Burma including Nasaka Director Col Aung Ngwe went to Israel for taking advanced training about administration and returned home, after completing it on the first week of December 2004. On 8th December, he arrived at Nasaka Headquarters of Maungdaw Township from Rangoon to carry out his formal duty. After his arrival at Maungdaw, he went throughout the town and met with public and said to them, “We, Nasaka have at a standstill power though we are facing some problems. You all are asked to work with us as previous position and take cooperation of Nasaka forces.” Again, on 15th December, he went to Rangoon for official matter and returned to Maungdaw on 22nd December. But, on 25th December, he was arrested by the army, he more added.

 

Similarly, on 25th December, all the Camp-in-Charge of Nasaka camps and the junior officers of MI of Maungdaw and Buthidaung Townships were also arrested by army. All the Nasaka camps were reinforced by army on that day, sources said.

 

 The same day, six civilian Rakhines and six Rohingyas, who were collaborators of Nasaka and MI, were also arrested by army from Maungdaw town only. The six-Rakhine are: Mondine Chay, Village Peace and Development Council Chairman (VPDC) of Ward No.1, U Lulu, hailed from Ward No.1, U Pha Chay, ex-VPDC Chairman of Nga Khura village, U Soe Win Chay, the present Chairman of Nga Khura village, U Myint Thein, the owner of MICO Co. Ltd and U Tun Myint  Thein, Myoma  Ka Nyin Tan village. The arrested six-Rohingya are: U Kyaw Soe (alias) Raza Meah, 45, hailed from Ward No. 1, Maung Maung Shwe (alias) Khasim, 30, Lake Ya village, Sham Shu, 50, Taung Pyo village, Bo Zahir, 50, hailed from Ward No.4, Rofique, 45, hailed from Ward No.6 and Abdul Matalab, hailed from Shwe Zarr village, said a collaborator of Nasaka and MI of Maungdaw Town who is not arrested.

 

On December 25, 2004, all the arrested officers and civilians were brought to Sittwe (Akyab) for interrogation for illegal involvement in corruption.

 

Some Nasakas are forced to retire, some are forced to abandon their jobs and some are sent to front line. The Nasakas, who were not arrested, were ordered to transfer with their families to Sittwe with their own expenses by December 30. The Tactical Operation Commands (TOCs) of Buthidaung ordered that all the cases of collaborators of Naskas and MI and the VPDC Chairmen have been judge by the end of December 31, 2004, the collaborator further said.

 

According to unconfirmed news, the Nasaka Director, the deputy Nasaka Director, the Chief of the Military Intelligence-18, nine Nasaka Sector Commanders including five civilians, in total 17, were sentenced to 10 years jailed  per each in Sittwe on the first week of January 2005, after interrogations. ##
