Delayed Opening the longest bridge in Burma

Burmese Military regime has delayed the opening of the

longest bridge in Burma, Moulmein (Mawlamyine)-Mattama

(Salween Bridge) due to security reason according to

authorities.

 

The government planned to open the bridge, which is

long 11575 feets on Burma’s Independent Day, on

January 4, 2005.

 

“The reason of the authorities is about the bomb

explosion in Pa-an, the capital of Karen State. At the

moment the government put tight security along the

bridge,” IMNA reporter, Nai Jorn reported.

 

“The authorities do not allow the ferries, boats and

ships crossing in the middle of the bridge. They

ordered all of the ferries, boats and ships to route

near the river shore and make more checking,” Nai Jorn

added.

 

The government decided to open the bridge in the

beginning of Year 2005, they already ordered township

PDC, Village PDC, Teacher, Women Affair organization

to join in opening ceremony.

 

In the ceremony, Chief of Army Regional Commander,

Lt.Gen Maung Bo, Transporting Ministry authorities and

Southeast Command Commander planned to attend.

 

The government Construction Ministry started building

this bridge since 2001 and completed building it at

the end of year 2004.

 

The main purpose of building the bridge is to support

“Asia Railway Plan” that will connect India,

Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand and Vietnam and in

countryside railway connection from Rangoon to Tavoy.

 

The government moved about 1500 households for

building the bridge and straight the route from Ye.

Initially, the regime tried to move the houses by

force and later they paid compensation to house owner

after the news about that eviction was broadcasted BBC

and DVB station from Landon and Oslo respectively.
