After hundreds of unlicensed cars in Three Pagoda Pass border town, which the local car owners used as ‘ferries’ along Three Pagoda Pass – Thanbyuzayat motor road, were taken by the SPDC authorities at the end of March, the ferry fares have suddenly increased, said the passengers who travel on that road.

The normal ferry fare from the border town to Thanbyuzayat town in Mon State is about 12, 000 Kyat (approximately 12 US Dollar), but it increases to 20, 000 Kyat (approximately 20 US Dollar), and if the passengers wish to be on the front of car (where they could get comfortable sofa and air conditioned space), they have to pay 25, 000 Kyat, said Mr. Nai Myint, a passenger.

However, the current licensed car transport and the car owners satisfied with the increase of ferry fares.

“It is a good opportunity for us.   We have always competed those unlicensed cars in past and we received only small income.  Now, we could have chance to have better ferry fare”, said Mr. Nai Lun, a driver from Mudon Township, who transports passengers on this road for years.

Even though many cars were taken by the authorities, there is no serious transport problem in this road, said a member of Township Car Association, who asked to not identify his name.

“For our passengers, we have no choice.  If we plan to travel, whether the ferry fares are expensive or cheap, we have to pay and travel”, expressed Nai Myint.

The member of Township Car Association also described that currently there are only 20 licensed cars running on this motor road.  The number has been reduced from 100 total licensed and unlicensed cars in March.

SPDC set the deadline to the ceasefire groups and those who belonged unlicensed cars to turn up and offer their cars to the authorities in every township by March 31, 2005.   Many ceasefire groups, Buddhist monks and individuals offered their cars to the authorities on the set date.  However, some still refused and hid their cars.

In Three Pagoda Pass border town, the ceasefire groups and individuals already offered their cars and that made less cars for transport from the border into town in Mon State. Three Pagoda Pass – Thanbyuzayat motor road could be used from November to May of Burma’s cold and dry seasons.  In rainy season, transport route changes to water way along Zami river to Karen State.
