Burmese Army’s Tactical Commander dismissed the

Sub-town authorities in Ye Township, Khaw-zar Sub-Town

Peace and Development Council Chairman from his

chairman’ position after he met a senior leader of

the New Mon State Party (NMSP), at the end of December

2004.

Khaw-zar village headman, Mr. Nai Hlike replaced with

a retired soldier of Burmese Army, after he willingly

received the NMSP’s Tavoy district officials and NMSP

Education authorities on December 24.

“Now he was already kicked out by the Tactical

Commander Col-Nyi Nyi when I again met him recently,”

a NMSP senior member said.

“He told me that the commander met him after he met us

and asked him why he met us. He was accused supporting

the Mon rebel group (NMSP), which is likely supporting

the oppositions to the government.  That was why the

commander kicked out him and did a replacement,”

explained by the NMSP senior member.

Khaw-zar has more than 500 households and the Burmese

Army created it as a Sub-town in mid-2004 in order to

control the whole area. The Burmese army confiscated

more than 3000 acres land and put three battalions in

the area. Before creating Sub-town, the Burmese Army

put No. 3 Tactical Command to launch military

operation against a Mon splinter group (HRP), which

has activities in the area. During 2003-2004 military

operations, a gross human rights violations such as

sexual violations against women, summary execution,

conscription of forced labour and cruel and

mis-treatment against the civilians were seriously

committed by soldiers.

NMSP had influence in this area more than two decades

before it agreed for cease-fire with the military

regime in Rangoon. After the ceased-fire, NMSP

authorities and its armed faction, troops of Mon

National Liberation Army (MNLA), was banned to launch

any political and military activities in the area due

to agreement.

NMSP has now faced difficulties to enter into the area

in order to provide social services such as health

care, education and judicial affairs

A NMSP’s local court in Aleskan village in Yebyu

Township was also banned by the Burmese Army and three

NMSP members were arrested.   Accordingly to senior

NMSP members said, the three of NMSP members were

sentenced for one-year imprisonment in Moulmein prison

situates in the capital of Mon State.
