Dhaka defers Tri-Nation gas pipeline project meeting

Mizzima News

February 14, 3005

Guwahati: The first meeting of the technical committee for a tri-nation

gas pipeline in India, Bangladesh and Burma, originally scheduled for

Feb. 14, has been postponed at the request of the Bangladesh government,

"We are postponing the meeting seven to 10 days from Feb. 14, depending

on the convenience of the parties," Soe Myint, director general of

Burma's Energy Ministry, said in a message to Bangladesh Minister for

Energy and Mineral Resources A.K.M. Mosharraf Hossain.

Mosharraf Hossain argued on Sunday that they were "not prepared for the

meeting" because the date had been announced suddenly. At a petroleum

ministers meeting in Rangoon, the three countries had agreed in

principle to lay the gas pipeline. The technical committee was to follow

up the action in a meeting Feb. 14.

The new date is supposed to be set by Rangoon after consultations with

the governments in New Delhi and Dhaka.

A six-member techno-commercial working committee was formed to carry out

a detailed study on the gas pipeline project during the last meeting of

energy ministry officials from Burma, India and Bangladesh in Rangoon in

 January.

After the initial agreement to lay a 290-kilometer pipeline from gas

fields in Burma to India through Bangladesh, the government of Begum

Khaleda Zia in Dhaka expressed optimism, but a deal between India and

Bangladesh has yet to be resolved.

The gas pipeline, to start from Arakan province in Burma, and enter the

North East Indian states of Mizoram and Tripura, will enter Bangladesh

through the Brahmanbaria  area to the Rajshahi border before  reaching

Kolkata, India.

Burmese military dismisses 10,000 MAPT employees

Independent Mon News Agency

February 14, 2005

The Burmese military has dismissed 10,000 Myanmar Agriculture Produce

Trading (MAPT) department employees in the country, according to an

employee of the central department in Rangoon.

The government central MAPT department in Rangoon sent those dismissed

an official letter at the start of February, according to the employee.

"Only 3,509 employees were left," the employee said. An IMNA source in

Rangoon confirmed it.

The government dismissed the employees because they have no work to do,

since the regime announced they are not going to buy paddy from farmers

at midyear, according to the employee.

"But the government gave a salary to employees until Jan. 31 of this

year," he explained. "It was the last day that employees received the

salary."

"Employees explained to me that the regime already informed them that

the government was going to dismiss them after the announcement," said

an IMNA source.

"We did not receive compensation," said a woman MAPT employee in Mudon

town, Mon State, who was trying to move to a Township Peace and

Development Council department.

"But the government gave a chance to young employees to move and work

in other departments," she said. "More than 50 year old MAPT employees

were given retirement," she added. "Local township departments were

removed and only state and division departments were left."

The Burmese military and Myanmar Agriculture Produce Trading

Department stopped buying paddy at a low price and lending money to

farmers for more than a year.

Shan group calls for release of leaders

February 13, S.H.A.N

Two ceasefire groups have jointly written to Senior General Than Shwe,

State Peace and Development Council chairman, urging speedy release of

their leaders detained last week, according to ceasefire sources.

"We are not trying to be smart or unreasonable," said the highly

placed source. "But attending the National Convention (Feb. 17) without

our leaders' freedom is simply unthinkable".

No copies of the communication was provided by the Shan State Peace

Council, a joint office of Shan State Army "North" and Shan State

National Army.

The release of Sai Nyunt Lwin, assistent general secretary of the

Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, detained on Feb. 6, 2003, was

Secured following the request from the grouping.

Those arrested last week by Rangoon included veteran Shan politician U

Shwe Ohn, who participated in the historic 1947 Panglong Conference;

Hkun Htun Oo, the SNLD chairman; Sai Nyunt Lwin, its general secretary;

and Sao Hso Ten, the SSPC chairman, among others.
