Dhaka, Nov 25: Bangladesh Rifle (BDR) seized another huge arms cache

from a bordering hill district of Bandaban Nov. 24, a day after the

seizure of a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the same district,

according to an official report.

The weapons seized are two 60mm and two 2-inch mortars, three British-

made LMGs and 49 magazines, 32 self-loading rifle (SLR) magazines, 11

AK 47assault rifle magazines, and 2,000 British-made LMG bullets.

The weapons were found on a bank of a pond in hilly Jarullachhari in

Naikhongchari Township in Bandarban near the Burma border.

The reliable sources said the seized arms and ammunition were

reportedly possessed by Muslim insurgent groups from bordering Arakan,

Burma, and two Muslim groups were active in this southern hill

district of Bangladesh.

On Nov. 23, the day before this incident, BDR seized seven AK-47s, two

M-16s, one rocket launcher, one point 22 bore rifle, two 12-bore

shotguns, two air rifles and a huge amount of ammunitions from the

same township.

In the last few months, Bangladeshi forces have seized over 100

sophisticated weapons and several ammunition and explosives including

anti-tank mines, grenades, rocket launchers, powerful bombs,

machineguns and various chemicals from the frontier area close to

Maungdaw, a bordering town in western Burma.

Arakan’s border security chief accused of involvement in heroin

=================================================================

Narinjara News

Maungdaw, Nov 25: The acting chief of the Burmese Border Security

Forces (Nasaka) in Maungdaw was charged with involvement in heroin

traffic Nov. 13, according to a police officer who declined to give

his name.

Lieutenant Colonel Myint Oo was detained at the Light Infantry

Division (233) base at Buthi Daung Township, and Arakan Chief of

Arakan Police Nyo Win will head the investigation of his involvement.

“He was accused of having connections with the heroine deals. He was

believed to be involved in exporting drugs to Bangladesh via

Maungdaw,” the same police officer continued.

Two months ago, two senior members of the United Wa State Army (UWSA)

visited Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, under the guise of having business

deals with the Samsung Company. Nasaka Chief Myint Oo helped the two

during the visit. There had been rumors in the Nasaka and Military

Intelligence community that the two UWSA members stayed at a hotel in

Cox’s Bazar and discussed heroine dealing abroad through Bangladesh

with local Bangladesh partners.

The present charge and investigation could be related to this rumor. A

business person from Maungdaw said there could be other business deals

that Myint Oo was involved in with UWSA and local smugglers.

Four cigarette distribution firms and a restaurant are owned and

operated by the UWSA and Kokant. A local businessman from Akyab says

these business firms could be the cover for heroine distribution to

the neighbouring country.

Since the purge of Prime Minister Khin Nyunt, Arakan State Military

Intelligence and Nasaka officials have been interrogated about their

business dealings.

Major San Aungin, in-charge of Nasaka area No (9) from Taung Bazar

Nasaka base in Buthi Daung, Major Tun Tun Oo, in-charge of Nasaka area

No (7), and a Major from the LIB (232) were among a total of seven

senior officers interrogated by the Buthi Daung Military Operation

Planing Command.

Myint Oo is the highest official of all the Military Intelligence and

Nasaka officials being detained and purged.
