Representatives of the People elected to the Parliament in the 1990 multiparty democratic elections

(Committee Representing the People's Parliament)

Notification  16 (8/00)

The National League for Democracy is a legitimate national political party.   Its candidates were elected as the people's choice in the 1990 multi-party general elections, which was free and fair. The military dictators have gazetted the NLD candidates who contested and were voted in as valid people's representatives.

The military dictators have since the 6 September 1998 unjustly and without any legal authority taken into custody these honorable Hluttaw representatives of good repute and kept them imprisoned.  One year and 345 days has elapsed. There are only 20 more days to go for it to be two years of confinement.

The perpetrators of these illegal incarcerations by the use of force have shamelessly and brazenly declared to the country and the world that they are being kept in " guesthouses for the purpose of discussions".  These victims and their families have not been told what offences, if any, they have

committed to deserve this prolonged illegal confinement. The only reason for such malevolent action is that the military dictators harbor hatred and enmity against the NLD which is working purely for the national good of the country without holding any malice or spite.

One extraordinary twist that has now occurred after such a prolonged  incarceration is this.  The innocent Dr. Thein Lwin,  Pyithu Hluttaw representative from Meiktila township constituency 2, (Mandalay division) who was incarcerated  since 6 September 1998 was remanded on 1 July, 2000 at the instigation of Sergeant Tin Aye of Meiktila Military Intelligence No 15 under the notorious and detestable provision of law (Section 5-j).

The so-called "guest houses" and "discussions", terms used by the military dictators are so contradictory and opposed to the actual facts. How can any discussion commencing on the 6 September 1998 be continuing to this day? Now to prolong the incarceration a section of the most unjust law is tagged on!

We vigorously denounce this.
