Representatives of the People elected to the Parliament in the 1990 multiparty democratic elections
(Committee representing Parliament)

Notification 1( 1/00) (translation)

1. The parliamentarians, who were elected in the free and fair multi-party general elections of 1990 by the people according to their wishes, have been arrested, imprisoned, incarcerated, and confined for over a year now. The military dictators have not to this date publicly declared what provisions of law they have contravened and they cannot do so because these individuals are respectable and highly esteemed. The only public utterance made by them is false and deceptive which is that " they are at the state guest houses for discussions".

2. These honorable parliamentarians are incarcerated at different military institutions under poor and deprived living conditions. The intimidation and threats used to coerce them to resign from their positions as members of parliament and from the National League for Democracy is referred to as "discussions". It is not just them. Pressure is being applied to their families and relatives also. In some cases, the "soft approach" is applied. Bribes and promises for commercial and better advantages and opportunities are being made. Example - One Captain Htoon Kyaw, member of the Military Intelligence visited the house of a parliamentarian and made overtures and persuasions. The military dictators are applying illegal tactics and fail to understand that the activities of the NLD members stem from a conviction and dedication to work till democracy is established in the country.

3. These honorable members of parliament have been kept captive far too long under such poor conditions that it is effecting their health. At times when they have fallen ill, proper medical treatment was not provided. Only when their health deteriorates to a critical life threatening stage they have been set free. This reflects the callousness, unfeeling, hardened and brutal mentality of the captors.

4. Maliciousness is the only reason for the imprisonment of parliamentarians who were elected by the people out of their own free will . This is illegal and we urge you in the strongest terms to set them free.
