Contents of letter dated 14 July 1999 from the Chairman of the National League for Democracy to the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council are reproduced and published for information.

 

Start       " Subject - The plight of Pyithu Hluttaw representatives suffering unjust and illegal detention."

 

1. U Than Htay, who became a Hluttaw representative as a result of free and fair elections in Constituency 2, Lashio township, Northern Shan State was illegally and unjustifiably arrested by the authorities on 6 September 1998.  It is now the 11th month of his incarceration.

 

2.  Besides being an NLD candidate he is an advocate of the High Court.

 

3.  Our information is that the living conditions under which he is being held is not commensurate with his social standing.

 

4.  U Than Htay is currently unwell suffering from kidney stones and is not receiving proper medical treatment - a reflection on the inhuman attitude of the authorities.

 

5.  U Than Htay is a distinguished member of the legal profession, an honorable Pyithu Hluttaw Representative and a member of the National League for Democracy.  We call your attention to the fact that the authorities that are holding him illegally will be held entirely accountable for any untoward and life threatening condition that could possibly eventuate."                                                  End
