Exiled Democratic Forces of Burma in Bangladesh Meet to Enhance Democracy Movement

Dhaka, June 7: Arakanese democracy activists exiled in Bangladesh held a meeting to enhance their movement.

The meeting was held at Lama Township of the Chittagong Hill Tracts from 2nd-3rd June.

At least 40 Arakanese democracy activists attended the meeting.

The exiles formed a group called the “Working Committee for Democracy Restoration in Burma” (WCDRB), which aims at working with other activists now exiled in many other foreign countries.

The first objective of the WCDRB in Dhaka is to launch demonstrations, hold rallies, and distribute leaflets, newsletters, and other materials concerning the democracy movement in Burma. The second task of the committee is to assist Burmese refugees in Bangladesh, a source said.

U Mrat Htun, a member of the newly formed working committee said, “We the exiled democratic activists of Burma now living in Bangladesh need to strengthen and enhance our movement like other exiled activists in other countries. And it should be our duty to help other Burmese refugees who have arrived in Bangladesh for their food, clothing, shelter, and medicine.”

“In the first place, we are going to stage a demonstration for the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the NLDthe main opposition party of Burmafrom house arrest on 19th June, her birthday. In the same way, we shall make efforts to organize politicians and students of Bangladesh to extract their support and sympathy for our democratic movements,” he added.

The committee is now preparing to hold a demonstration on Daw Suu’s birthday to demand that the democracy leader be released and that the ongoing National Convention be stopped.#
