Money for civilian
military training disappears, local authority blamed
Akyab, November 7: In Paw Taw
Township, Arakan, money collected from the citizens
for the civilian military training has been misused by the local Village Peace
and Development Council, (the village level ruling junta), according to an
anonymous local teacher.
Starting from September, the President of Thawon Chaung VPDC, U Shwe Tha, collected 3,000 kyats from each household, claiming it to be the objective
of the Township Peace and Development Council to fund military training.
The fund was to be used for the 20 trainees from the
village, for their accommodations, food and wages.
The training has been postponed for the time being, since
the authority are busy with other more important tasks such as selling their
version of Road Map for Democracy.
Though the training was postponed, money for the training
disappeared in the hands of officials of Township Peace and Development Council
(TPDC) , Police and Village Peace (VPDC) and
Development Council , rather than going back to the contributors.
Thawon Chaung
village has about 400 households, out of which about 300 households contributed
3,000 kyats each. #
