attempts to raise organized campaign of lies
Dhaka, 13th June
03: Seventeen members of
the National League for Democracy (NLD) including the bodyguard of Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi, Tun Zaw Zaw, the
popular leader of Burmese Opposition have been reportedly tortured and
interrogated at Khanti Prison, in Sagaing
Division in northern part of Burma.
The National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) in an emergency press release
(1/2003) today said that the seventeen NLD members have been brutally tortured
for forcing them to confess that the Depayin Massacre
on 30th May was a confrontation
between the pro- and anti- Aung San Suu Kyi groups, and that Daw Aung San Suu
Kyi was abusing democracy, and the NLD instigated the violence that day. Phado Mansha, the General
Secretary of NCUB quoting sources in the hospital said in the press release
that, the SPDC junta was trying to raise an organized campaign of lies to the
world by distorting the facts of what happened at Dapeyin
that day.
Quoting the district hospital sources that are attending to them he also said
that the physical condition of the seventeen youths including the bodyguard of
Suu Kyi was also quickly deteriorating due to the wound they received and
physical torture by the Burmese military intelligence personnel. Besides all of them have been kept incommunicado since their arrest
on 30th May.
Besides the NCUB expressed high concern at the disappearance of a large number
of people since that incident who have never returned home till now.
The NCUB is the umbrella organization of a number of Burmese opposition groups
including the NCGUB (National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma), the
Democratic Alliance of Burma (DAB), the National League for Democracy
