BURMESE NAVY NABS A
SMUGGLER'S BOAT WITH A HUGE CARGO
Kyaukpru, 6th March 02: A smuggler's boat from Mon State, in the
southern part of Burma was nabbed by the Burmese Navy in the Arakan (Rakhine) waters, according to our correspondent.
On February 10th, a Burmese
Navy patrol boat # 991 seized a big engine boat, the Way Lwin Oo, owned by U
Aung Hein of Ye town from Mon State in the waters off Cheduba
island, allegedly heading towards Bangladesh, near Man Aung town.
A total of eight crew members of the boat were arrested from the boat. The
confiscated cargo in the boat included 4,500 bags of rice, 6,000 kg of jujube
pickles (jee-yo-thoke), and kyat
415,000 cash.
In an order from the Western Command at Ann, the confiscated cargo has been
directed to be handed over to the military supplies division without producing
it to the court of law according to rules.
It is usual for the Burmese Navy and Customs to seize smuggling boats if the
crew do not pay bribes, and let go if they can get their demand.
The eight crew members will be produced to the court on charges of illegal
trafficking. #
