Three Nations Sit Jan 12-13 to Talk Gas Pipeline:

Arakan People would be Aware about Gas pipeline.

Chittagong, December, 20: The Energy ministers of Bangladesh, India and Burma will meet in Burma on January 12 and 13 to discuss regional energy cooperation, including the possibility of implementing a transnational gas pipeline, reported by the “The Daily Star” yesterday.

The possibility of implementing a transnational gas pipeline will also be discussed during the January 9-11 SAARC summit in Dhaka.

“We know that during the construction of the Yadana pipeline, the local villagers accompanied by their family members had suffered a variety of serious abuses, including forced relocation, forced labor, rape, torture, and murder at the hands of SPDC military that were securing the route of the Yadana pipeline project managed by Unocal, France’s Total, and the Burmese State oil company,” said U Maung Naing from Ranong township, the southern part of Burma, who recently visited the Bangladesh.

If the implementing of a transnational gas pipeline is okay, in the same way, people of Arakan will be suffered a variety of harsh abuses such as forced relocation, forced labor, rape, torture, and murder by SPDC military who were securing the route of the Arakan gas pipeline project supervised by the companies of India and Korea, Maung Naing further added.

The money of sale of natural gas to India will be gone to the SPDC who uses it to buy arms and ammunition to suppress its own people.

A ground-breaking settlement thought to be worth millions of dollars has been reached in the long-running human rights case brought by Burmese villagers against the energy giant Unocal, it emerged on 14th December 2004, reported by the “The Guardian”.

Getting lessons from the Unocal, Daewoo (Korea) and Indian companies, who are planning an Arakan pipeline, must shower more to the people along the pipeline to buy their support such as more clinics, schools, roads, chickens in exchange for the Burmese people accepting that they have no input into how their sources are used or whose land will be confiscated and that the military junta will be getting much much richer, said a intellectual to Kaladan Press.

As a result, Arakan people would be aware about the Arakan gas pipeline and have to campaign strongly against the SPDC not to sell natural gas to India without concerning the Arakan people while most of the people of Arakan have been deprived of electricity. ##
