UNHCR’s Asia- Pacific Director Visited the Rohingya Refugee Camps

Cox’s Bazar, December 06:  A team of UN High Commissioner of Refugees led by Asia-Pacific Director Janet Lim visited the two Rohingya Camps on 4th of December 2004, said a refugee leader when Kaladan Press asked him by telephone.

At first the delegation visited the Kutupalong refugee camp at about 10:00 am and left to Nayapara refugee camp at about 2:00 pm, the refugee leader further said.

Lim arrived in Bangladesh on December 2 in a nine-day tour to probe the violent incidents of the refugee camp.

While visited the Kutupalong camp, the delegation asked the refugees about the incidents of 18th and 19th of November 2004 and they took photos the wounded refugees in a violent clashes at Kutupalong camp in Ukhiya upazila. They also inquired the nearby Bengali villagers about the incidents. But, they didn’t say anything to the refugees, said another refugee leader who refused to say his name for his security purpose.

The UN team also met local officials, representatives of NGOs and some refugee leaders of both the camps, said officials.

Expressing concern about the government crackdown after violent incidents in the Kutupalong camp, the UN team urged the Bangladesh government to immediately resume the repatriation process, officials continued.

The present situation of the two refugee camps is normal. But, so far some refugees are not allowed to enter the camp that fled the camp while the incidents were occurred at the camp. They are also cancelled from the list of the refugees but their families remain in the camp. They know nothing about the repatriation and there is no talking about the repatriation, said the refugee leader.

The repatriation process has remained stalled since August 9 when some seven members of two Rohingya families returned to their homeland.

At present, about 20,000 Rohingyas are living in the two refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar district. ##
