One woman killed after rape and another jailed for 20 years

Buthidaung, September 26:
Military Intelligence-18 (MI) personnel raped two Rohingya women of whom one was killed and the other one was sentenced to 20 years jail at Buthidaung Town, Arakan State, Burma, said a trader of Buthidaung town.

The victims are Nur Nahar, 25, daughter of Sayed Akbar, mother of a 4-year old boy and Minara Begum, 30, mother of two children, both of them from Ward No. 1 of Buthidaung town, Arakan State, he further said.

On September 15, members of the Military Intelligence-18 picked up the two Rohingya women from their homes and carried them to MI camp under the pretext of enquiry about their husbands, who have been working in Saudi Arabia since last 4 years. But the MI alleged that the two women had recently gone to Bangladesh to meet with their visiting husbands there. But they denied the charges, said a relative of the victims.

Sources said that their husbands had neither visited Bangladesh nor Buthidaung after they had left for Saudi Arabia.

In MI camp the both women were gang raped. After that Nur Nahar was killed while Minara Begum was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment without due process of law, said another relative of the victims referring not to mention his name.

From 1st September 2004 to till now, the SPDC authorities reportedly killed six women and girls after raping them in Maungdaw and Buthidaung Townships, Arakan State.

“A member of Arakan Human Rights Organization (AHRO) from Maungdaw Town said, “SPDC authorities such as Nasaka, Military Intelligence (MI), military personnel and police picked up some Rohingya girls and women from their villages and carried to their camps by implicating them false and fabricated allegations. Then, they kill the women after rape like Shan State.”

The common people said that this heinous action of the MI was apparently taken in revenge for the death on 3rd September of a Nasaka junior officer Rang Aung who had committed rape on a minor girl namely Amina Khatun, 13, of the village of Thet Kaine Nyer(Shatkania Para) under Maungdaw Township, people of Buthidaung Town said. ##
