Crackdown On Rohingya Villagers

Maungdaw, September 25:
The Nasaka and police are terrorizing the Rohingya people in the village of Thet Kaine Nyar (Shatkania) and its localities in northern Maungadw, Arakan State, said Sayed Alam, who recently crossed the border to Bangladesh.

The Nasaka troops and police started crackdown on the villagers on September 15 in retaliation for the death of a Nasaka Junior officer Rang Aung who had raped a young girl and injured a villager by gunshot, Sayed further continued.

The story of the incident is that: “On September 3, Ran Aung with a Nasaka soldier had seized and raped Amina, 13, a daughter of Noor Hussain of Thet Kaine Nyar village, while she together with her younger sister were tending cattle on a hillside grazing ground of the village. When the incident was informed by the younger sister 4 villagers, including Shafiqul Alam S/o, Gulam Hussain who is a cousin of the rape victim, rushed to the spot whereupon Ran Aung opened fire with his revolver on them injuring Shafiqul Alam. Despite firing the four angry villagers continued chasing the two culprits. At one stage Ran Aung could escape away while his fellow soldier was caught up, he further added.

After that the villagers took the rape victim Amina and her injured cousin Shafiqul Alam together with the held up soldier to nearby Nasaka camp at Ye Nauk Ngatha and the officer was apprised of the incident. At once the officer sent Amina and Shafiqul Islam to Mya Waddi Nasaka camp at Kyein Chaung (Bawli Bazar) from where they were sent onward to Maungdaw hospital for treatment, said another villager who also crossed the Burma-Bangladesh border.

During search the dead body of Ran Aung was found in a creek after two days on September 5. The villagers believe that the drunken Rang Aung had jumped into the creek and was swept away by the current of the water and drowned. It infuriates the Nasaka, he further added.

It was almost after 12 days on September 15, under the instruction from higher authorities, the Nasaka troops and police began to brutalize the villagers in Thet Kaine Nyar and its neighborhood. They made house-to-house search and seized and carried to Kyin Chaung Nasaka camp about 60 villagers, including 10 teenaged girls, where the girls were gang raped. The following morning it was learned that one of the girls died of rape violence. But the police refused to hand over the dead body to her relatives and after a postmortem they themselves buried it in total defiance of Muslim funeral rites. The medical examination report has still been kept secret. Although dead bodies were handed over to relatives in earlier cases why they refused to do so in this case is a mystery, another villager who crossed the border later.

On 14th September, an unidentified dead body of a Rohingya woman of about 25 years was found in a paddy field of Auk Pyeu Hma (Kasari Bil) village. Under the pretext of enquiry of the case, about 15 youths of the villages have been arrested. But the villagers comprehend that Nasaka had killed her after committing rape and then thrown her dead body in the paddy field to incriminate and punish the villagers the villager added.

Meanwhile, on September 17, the villagers found three dead bodies of the Rohingya girls floating at the mouth of the Pyuma Chaung (creek) close to a Nasaka camp. They could not be identified as their faces were badly bruised with violence marks. People believe that they might be from among those 10 girls who were earlier picked up. On the other hand, the fate of the other girls is still unknown as no one is allowed to approach the Nasaka camp where they have been made captive, said a villager named Sultan.

Excepting women and small children all the villagers have gone into hiding to avoid arrest. Even the nearby villagers have been warned of dire consequences if they provide shelters to the fleeing villagers of Thet Kaine Nyar. Many people, some with all members of their families, had crossed the border over to Bangladesh in search of safe shelters. Of the arrestees so far 20 people were sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on September 19, said Ahmed.  ##
