A Court of Maungdaw Town in Arakan State of western Burma on August 13, 2004, sentenced two Rohingya youths to 7-year imprisonment for alleging anti-government activities, according to our correspondent from Maung daw Town.

Number one Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Maungdaw Town gave the verdict without proper inquiry of the cases, he further added.

The convicts are Rashid Ahmed, 21, son of Sultan and Son of Nurul Alam, 22, of Shikdar Para of Maungdaw Town. They both were present in the court during the delivery of the judgment, said a relative of the victims.

The two were arrested by Border Security Force (Nasaka) on December 27, 2003, while the State Peace and development Council (SPDC) authorities accompanied by police and Nasaka destroyed 26-dwelling houses of Myo Ma Kayan Dan (Shikdar Para) village of Maungdaw town in Arakan State, he more added.

At that juncture, some village youths resisted while the Nasaka and police attacked and destroying their houses. After for a moment, the youths withdrew from their resistance. But, two youths (mentioned above) were arrested by the Nasaka and were carried away to their camp by alleging them anti-government activities, a villager said.

After15 days, they were brought to Maungdaw jail where they faced interrogation by the joint interrogation cell. As the investigators from different agencies, including Military intelligence (MI) failed to get any clue about the anti-activities of the government except their resistance of Nasaka forces while Nasaka were destroying their (arrestees’) houses, said another relative.

The convicts with 7-year jail have no rights to appeal to the High Court against the judgment in 7 days and the punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the date of their arrest, the judge said, according to a relative of convicts.

Victims’ parents were present in the court and they broke down in tears on hearing the verdict. They also express their un-satisfaction over the judgment

The court framed charges against the accused 15 days before their jail sentence.
