A Man Detained with False Case by MI (18) in northern Arakan

Rathedaung, June 11:
On 19th May 2004, the Military Intelligence No.18 (MI-18) arrested and detained one man in their camp by accusing of involvement with insurgent groups, according to our correspondent.

The arrested person is Molvi Shabbir Ahamed, 38, son of Tayum Gulal, hailing from Rachan Pyin village of Rathedaung township, Arakan State.

The Shabbir recently married to Ms. Salima Khatun, daughter of Molvi Hassan who has been living in Saudi Arabia since 1996, hailed from Nalbonia village of Maungdaw township, Arakan State. His father-in-law had to bear all the cost of the wedding. So, he was living under the influence of his wife and mother-in-law. But, he did not like to live under the pressure of the women. He was also authorized by his father-in-law to look after the whole family members, he further added.

By regarding above-mentioned, the Molvi Shabbir Ahmed has fled to Bangladesh after quarrelling with his wife. He got a job in a mosque of Bangladesh Border area with a salary of Tk.500/- per month, the victim said to our source while he was in Bangladesh.

Sensing about her son-in-law was living in a mosque of Bangladesh; his mother-in-law came to Bangladesh and left again with her son-in-law to their native place, Nalbonia village of Maungdaw Township. Living some days with his wife, he then went to his parents’ house in Rathedaung Township. This made his mother-in-law very angry. So, she went to MI-18 office and filed a case against her son-in-law that he is being linked with insurgent groups, said a relative of Shabbir to our source.

Regarding this, on the above-mentioned day, a team of police went to the house of Shabbir in Rathedaung Township and arrested him. Afterwards, Police handed over him to MI-18 and detained in their camp, he further added.

The MI authority threatened to continue the detention until their demand is met. The MI authority asked the Shabbir to pay only Kyat 1,000,000/- (US$1,111) for his release. He is unable to bribe such amount, so, he is still in detention, said our source. ##
