Diarrhea Claims Three Infants in Teknaf Makeshift Refugee Camp

Teknaf, May 23: Three infants have so far died of diarrhea at Teknaf Makeshift Burmese Rohingya refugee camp (unofficial refugee camp), said Ibrahim, reporter of Kaladan Press Network.

Diarrhea broke out in an alarming at Teknaf refugee camp from the beginning of this month, but the diarrhea patients could not be admitted to any health complex, he further added.

Those who have died so far are Hussain Ahmed, 1- year, son of Mohammed Ayub, Matiur Rahman, 3 months, son of Sayed Hussain and Asma Begum, 5 months, daughter of Abdul Malek. They all died of diarrhea within 6 days (from15 to 20 May 2004), said a refugee to our source.

The sweltering heat and the use of unhygienic latrines cause the outbreak of the disease, said a quack doctor of the refugee camp.

“We are unable to provide necessary medical facilities to the patients due to acute scarcity of IV saline and other essential medicines,” the quack doctor further added.

It may be recalled that on 4th May 2004, three refugee children died of diarrhea in one day in this camp.

An estimated 970 undocumented Rohingya refugee families, numbering about 7,000 people, have been living in this makeshift huts for more than two years after they were dragged and driven out of their shelters among the locals, during an operation in 2002.

The authorities had herded them together in this place where they were living under open sky without any help from anyone. After some time, the refugees themselves started building makeshift huts on their own initiative.

Unfortunately, these hapless and helpless souls are not even documented as refugees by the authorities concerned.

Further more, the cyclonic storm over northwest Bay that crossed the Cox’s Bazar coast on 19th May afternoon also damaged this makeshift refugee camp.

It may be mentioned here that on March 24, 2004, a fire broke out in the refugee camp and then local government officials imposed restriction on the movement of refugees of the camp, what the authorities say, for the security of the refugees. Due to restriction, no NGO workers are allowed to enter inside the camp. ##
