Fire at the
Burma Embassy: Rohingya Refugees behind the Arson Attack

Chittagong, April 10: On 7th April 2004, at 9.30 am, three Rohingya refugees armed with lethal weapons, illegally entered the embassy compound and setting it on fire, according to Dr. Kamal, who is living in Kualar Lumpur, Malaysia.

The three, with an axe, a knife and plastic bags filled with petrol, allegedly climbed over the fence at the back of the embassy, he further added.

The trio had wanted a letter, which they claimed was an official document, translated into English and certified by the embassy. The letter is to be written in Burmese, stated that the father of one of the suspects who is in custody, was a war veteran, by Reme Ahmad in The Straits Times.

“The men look angry, so, I ran back into the embassy and locked the door,” Zaw Tun Oo, the second secretary of the embassy said.

“But we could not certify the letter as all they had was a photocopy. We wanted the original letter for verification,” Said Zaw.

He also said the three last visited the Embassy on Tuesday, on 6th April evening. They were not entertained as it was after office hours.

The three then started breaking the windows and banging on the doors. Broken glass pieces injured Zaw on his right hand. Hearing the voices, Minister Counselor U Khin Maung Lynn, 53, went outside to try and pacify the suspects. The suspects, however, attacked U Khin, slashing him on his arm and head.

While the scuffle was taking place, one of the suspects, hit the pieces of cloth, which he carried in the plastic bag and threw it into the embassy. Within seconds, the ground floor of the two-storey building was in flames and in less than 5 minutes, the building was on fire. The blaze, which began about 9.55am, destroyed the small building in Jalan Ru, off Jalan Ampang Hilir.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, but not before “the office block was destroyed,” the Kuala Lumpur Fire Services spokesman said.

U Hla and the rest of the embassy staff, including two locals, managed to escaped to another building next door. The ambassador’s Benz S380 was also damaged in the incident.

Police arrived soon afterward. 14 people including 2 women, 8 children, the 3 attackers and another Rohingya who was outside the embassy were arrested and detained for questions by police in connection with arson attack and assault. The 11 others were believed to be family members of the three.

The arrested four men will be investigated for attempted murders, arson and causing damage to property. They will also be charged under the immigration Act for not having valid documents. They are Muslim Rohingyas in the process of verifying their documents to seek refugee status with UNHCR, said Noh Omar, according to Jalil Hamid in Kualar Lumpur.

The City police Chief Deputy (DCP) Mustafa said the public had nothing to worry about, as the incident was an isolated case and an internal affairs of the Myanmar embassy and its citizens.

The men are believed to have been disgruntled after trying for several days to have their documents verified by embassy staff, Deputy Internal Security Minister Noh Omar Told reporters.

The injured diplomat is recovering in hospital after being attacked.

Burma condemns the premeditated and dastardly attack against its embassy and security had been raised at its missions around the world.

When asked a Rohingya named Idris who is living in Malaysia said, “ We are very anxious for the Malasian Government’s restrictions towards Rohingya Refugees in future.
