Prices Of Some Essential Commodities Go Up While Paddy Price Go Down In Northern Arakan

Maungdaw, January 03:
The prices of some essential items continued to show an upward trend in the markets of Maungdaw townships in Arakan State for the last few days while the price of paddy goes down significantly the end of the year, said a trader of Maungdaw town.

Prices of some commodities, especially onion, garlic, chilli, mustard oil, meat and fish, rose by leaps and bounds to abnormal proportions towards the end of the year. But, the price of paddy goes down below the price of production rate, he further added.

The price of paddy goes down. Last year, a hundred baskets (one basket = 14 kg) of paddy, priced at Kyat 150,00 but this year (2004) it is priced at only Kyat 60,000(six thousand). A 50 kg of rice bag is being sold at Kyat 6,500 to 7,000 up from Kyat 12,000 to 13,000 two months ago. Nonetheless, no one dares to buy the rice due to the ban. As a result, the farmers are facing acute financial hardship, a farmer from Maungdaw Town   said to our source.

Retailers at Maungdaw market asked for Kyat 650 for a Viss (1.75 kg) of onion, saying price was Kyat 250 more than what it was before. Per Viss garlic at Kyat 800 from Kyat 700, dry chilli at Kyat 2,200 from the previous rate of Kyat 1,500 per Viss.

Per Kg fish (good quality) sold at Kyat 1,800 up from Kyat1, 600 while a big cock (about 2.5kg) chicken cost Kyat 3,000 up from Kyat 2,200. Per Viss beef cost Kyat 3,000 up from Kyat 2,800, while a Viss of mutton cost Kyat 3,000 up from Kyat 2,500, said a shopkeeper to our sources.
