A NASAKA GATE SET UP TO CHECK ROHINGYA TRAVELERS

Date: Friday January 02, 2004

Maungdaw, January 02:
A Nasaka (Border Security Force) check-post has been set up recently at 3-miles off Maungdaw Town to check the Rohingya travellers within the Maungdaw Township, according to our correspondent.

This check-post is well known as a gate of “Bawli Bazar-Monestory Nasaka Gate,” which is under Nasaka control. They check the Rohingya travelers who cross the check-post. It is especially set up for up and down travelers, those who want to go to northern Maungdaw and who come to Maungdaw from northern side of Maungdaw Township, he further added.

All the Rohingya travelers must show their travel passes to the Nasaka authorities before crossing the gate, which are recently obtain from Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC) Chairman or Ward Chairman of Maungdaw town, said a Rohingya traveler who once travelled through the said gate.

Every Rohingya traveler has to pay Kyat 500 to the VPDC or Word Chairmen to obtain travel pass for 14 days, he further said.

If a traveler fails to submit travel pass to the Nasaka authority of the check-post, he has to pay Kyat 500 as fine for continuation of his journey, said another villager.

If a traveler were a female, she would be taken off her scarf, while crossing the Nasaka Check-post. Besides, all the passengers have to be put off the vehicles while crossing the gate.

Except Rohingyas, other communities are exempted from these kinds of harassment. ##
