Township Chairman Ordered to Vacate 65 Dwelling houses at MaungdawTownship

Maungdaw, October 11,2003: Maungdaw Township Peace and Development Council (TPDC) Chairman had ordered the Rohingya village to vacate their dwelling houses by October10, 2003, according to our correspondent of Maungdaw.

On September 18, 2003, the TPDC Chairman Captain Hla Pu had ordered the Ba Gone Nah village of Maungdaw south in Arakan State to vacate 65 dwelling houses as to establish a new army camp by October10 but the villagers still refuse to vacate the houses, he further said.

The affected villagers have appealed to the Chairman of TPDC to allow them to continue their stay and also requested for alternative site for their resettlement. But the government says nothing regarding that matter. There was also no instruction from government side about the compensation, according to another source.

To evacuate families are 65, including Badsha, Ismail, Mv. Mohamedul Hassan, Osman, Mohamed Taher, Abu Talek and Ms Begum Bahar.

“ Confiscation of Rohingya lands and uprooting of our old settlements is nothing but an attempt to destroy the economic bases of the Rohingya people,” said a village headman.

In the Same way, in last June 2003, the SPDC authorities had ordered to vacate 26 houses at Maungdaw Town. ##
