Dated: Monday September 8, 2003

Buthidaung, September 8: Army beat up a cleric named

Fayazul Islam’s wife and daughter because of their

scarves on their heads while entering the compound of

army, in which they were taking photographs of

Rohingya people on 2n September 2003, according to our

sources.

Since 1st September, armies have been taking family

photographs of Rohingya Muslims by taking Kyat-3, 000

per family in Buthidaung township of Arakan State.

When the army went to a village to take photographs,

they chose a place and were fenced and some chairs and

tables were set up in this place. Then they called one

family after one to take photographs, source further

said.

The government is conducting population census and

taking photographs in the areas inhabited by Rohingya,

in Buthidaung Township. Similarly, they took census

and photographs in June 2002 and the other communities

were exempted from being taken photographs, said a

schoolteacher.

Army verbally ordered that when the family members

entered the said army fenced compound all the female

members have to put off their scarves from their

heads. But, when the cleric’s wife and daughter were

entering the compound for taking photographs, they put

on their scarves on their heads. On seeing this, an

army walked towards them with a stick and beaten up

them severely, the schoolteacher further added.

Seeing this matter, villagers gave strong protest

against the army and were growing tension between army

and villagers. But, the cleric Maulana Fayazul Islam,

Tabalique Amir (leader) of the whole Arakan State,

timely controlled the situation. All SPDC authorities

in Arakan State respect him, according to a villager

who was participated in the incident.

One villager referring not to mention his name told

Kaladanpress that the army personnel in the name of

checking documents and taking photographs they

harassed the Rohingya villagers and were taking money

from the villagers.

“Another villager from Taung Bazar of Buthidaung

Township asked the army that, “ We are very poor,

facing difficulties to maintain our families, have no

jobs and have no freedom of movement.  Regarding

these, we are unable to pay such a big amount.” Then

the army said, “ It is not concerned to me and tell to

our boss.”

To enlist a newborn baby and to reduce a dead person

from the list, Kyat 500/- has been paid to the army

officer, said a village headman to our source.  ##
