FOUR ROHINGYA REFUGEES DROWNED AS TRAWLER SANK

Teknaf, August 10:
Four Rohingya refugees drowned as their fishing trawler sank in the Naf River on 31 st. July 2003, due to inclement weather, said a refugee from Nayapara Camp.

Two dead bodies of Mohammed Ismael and Abdur Rahim were found in the early hours of August 2 and two other dead bodies of Mohammed Saleh and Abdur Rashid were found on August 4, in the Naf River. These four dead bodies are the refugees of Block C, Nayapara Camp of Teknaf. The dead bodies were buried in the refugee cemetery with the permission of camp- in-charge, source further said.

The four Rohingya refugees went out of their camp at dead of night for fishing in the Naf River taking permission from a “Mazi” (Shed leader) named Omar Hakim by giving bribes, said another refugee to our source.

There is a process that any one who wishes to work out of the refugee camp has to bribe to the Mazi who is linked to the camp- in- charge, source further said.

According to a refugee leader, the rations that are provided by WFP have not sufficient for the refugees, as they want to go out of the refugee camp to earn extra money for their survival. ##
