BDR Seized Smuggled Goods In Teknaf

Teknaf, August 08
:  On July 26, 2003 a BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) team of Teknaf in a daylong anti- smuggling drive seized a motorboat with full load of goods in Kauyar Khali Creek of Bangladesh while it was on way to Burma, according to our source from Teknaf.

The BDR confiscated 11 bags of onion, 11 bags of garlic and 8 barrels of soybean oil worth Tk.150, 000/-. The boatmen escaped away when they got sense of the BDR’s presence there, source further said.

There is scarcity of onion, garlic and peas due to ban on carrying of these items from Burma proper to Arakan State. The people of Arakan have to depend on goods smuggled from Bangladesh, said a trader of Maungdaw town.

Previously, rice has been carried into Bangladesh, but, recently, rice has been carried into Burma, said a shopkeeper of Teknaf.

In return trip, many kinds of contraband items such as cigarettes, spices, clothes, drug, beer and gold have been carried into Bangladesh, said a trader of Teknaf. ##
