REPAIR WORKS OF MAUNGDAW JAME-MOSQUE AGAIN HALTED

Maungdaw, July 21: On 11 July 2003, The Chairman of the Maungdaw Township Peace and Development Council (TPDC) Capt. Hla Poo had issued an order to stop again all the repair works of the Maungdaw Jame-Mosque, said a community leader to our kaladanpress.

It has been nearly 4 years now that the authorities had prohibited any repairs and extension works of the said mosque. In the month of June 2003, on the repeated requests of Board of Trustees, the Chairman of the Maungdaw District Peace and Development Council (DPDC) had given permission for necessary repairs of the mosque. At that time the DPDC Chairman was out of station visiting Rangoon, said a prominent person named U Hla Maung.

Accordingly, the mosque management had collected and purchased necessary building materials, and when the repair works was in progress the TPDC Chairman Capt. Hla Poo has ordered to stop it, he further said.

This order has hurt the Muslim community while causing substantial loss to the mosque, said a religious leader to our correspondent.

The Jame-Mosque is one of the biggest and oldest mosques in Arakan, which now stands partly in ruin that requires immediate repairs and extension. ##
