UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES ORDERED CLOSED FROM MONDAY

Chittagong, June 02: Universities and colleges in

Burma have been ordered closed from Monday 2 June

until further notice following the arrest by junta

authorities of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi , according to

AFP, Rangoon.

It is a routine move during times of political

upheaval aimed at preventing the institutions becoming

a focus for popular uprising.

In the same way, after a widespread popular democracy

uprising in 1988,the universities

and colleges had been closed and  reopened in 2000.

The military junta said Saturday that the Nobel Peace

Laureate was placed under “ protective custody” in

northern Burma along with 18 members of her entourages

after clashes between her supporters and pro-junta mob

Friday left four dead and 50 injured. But, other

sources said that many people died and injured.

Since the military junta took power in 1988,

universities and colleges have been closed now and

then.
