SERIES OF BOMBS LEAVE 4 DEAD IN BURMA

Chittagong, May 22:Four bombs exploded in a Burma town

on the border with Thailand yesterday, killing 4

people, a Burma government spokesman said, according

to AP, Rangoon.

The blasts were in four different places in Tachilek,

340 miles northeast of Rangoon, and killed two

policemen and two civilians, the spokesman’s office

said in a statement.

No one claimed responsibility for the blasts, but the

Burma government statement said Shan State Army rebels

were suspected.

A spokesman for the Shan Rebels quoted the group’s

leader Yawd Serk as denying responsibility for the

bombings, which took place on the 45th anniversary of

the group’s establishment.

“ Today is a day for the Shan people to make merit for

the 45th anniversary of its resistance force. We do

not do sins like planting bombs,” Yawd Serk said.
